NEW AHSAA FOOTBALL ALIGNMENT - 3A REGION 8

In Class 3A, new Region 8 members include Deshler, Madison Academy and Westminster Academy, replacing Danville, Sheffield and Rogers.

Old region 8 alignment:                  New region 8 alignment:
Elkmont                                       Elkmont
West Morgan                                West Morgan
Clements                                      Colbert County
Danville                                        Lauderdale County
Sheffield                                       Clements
Colbert County                               Madison Academy
Lauderdale County                          Dreshler
Rogers                                         Westminster Academy

Deshler’s football dominance in Class 4A, Region 8 will come to an end in 2012.  A fixture in the Class 4A football playoffs for the past two decades, the Tigers will find themselves in Class 3A for at least the next two years as the AHSAA announced its reclassification for the school years covering 2012-13 and 2013-14 on Wednesday.

Several area schools will find themselves in different classes for the next two years, but Deshler’s drop was perhaps the most surprising.  Deshler neighbor Sheffield is dropping to Class 2A, while Rogers moves up to Class 4A, where it was situated before the 2010 reclassification.

ELKMONT LOSES TO MADISON ACADEMY - DUST DEVIL IN THE STANDS

Elkmont's football season ended with a 42-0 loss to Madison Academy last Friday night in the second round of the state playoffs.  The Red Devils ended with a 7-5 record.

The Mustangs were the better team; however, Elkmont did not play up to their ability.  Madison Academy scored early and often.  The Red Devils' defense could not stop the run or the pass.  The offense had four turnovers and could not get any offense through the air.  Even though, it was a disappointing end to the season,  this team has a lot to be proud of.

  • Beat county rivals - Ardmore, West Limestone and Clements
  • Returned to the 3A state playoffs after missing them last year
  • Upset 4th ranked and previously undefeated Hanceville in the first round of the playoffs
  • In a four year span, this senior class won more football games during their career than any other class in Elkmont High School history.
The Seniors were:

Sloan Hawkins:  Strong senior year, high motor, strong and tough, made a number of big plays on defense this year.

Bronson Ellis:  Amazing he was able to come back and play this season; strong and tough, hard worker, played better and better as the season progressed.

Cole Glass:  Outstanding career, excellent speed and jumping ability, a threat to score at anytime, made big plays this year running, pass catching, on defense and on special teams.

Skyler Gant:  Outstanding all around player, excellent speed and quickness, strong defensive player, great punt returner.

Logan Murphy:  High energy player, physical, aggressive, made a number of big plays on defense, outstanding punter.

Dillion Ferguson:  High motor player, always goes hard, made plays on the defensive line.

Juan Hernandez:  Great team player, hard worker, second string kicker, could have stepped in at anytime and done a good job.

Matt Newsom:  Great attitude, team player, did everything he was asked to do.

Austin McNatt:  Made some big plays as a receiver, effective starting cornerback.

Daniel Logan:   Three year starter, played a great deal as a freshman, effective offensive lineman, hard hitter, excellent tackler, outstanding linebacker.

Hayden Huseth:  Exciting player, fast and quick, made big plays both on offense and defense.

Cody Martin:  Three year starter, played a great deal as a freshman, excellent offensive lineman, physical player, excellent tackler, outstanding linebacker.

Jose Hernandez;  Three year starter, outstanding kicker, good team player.

The Dust Devil has enjoyed covering the football Red Devils this year from the stands.

ELKMONT ENDS SEASON WITH LOSS TO MUSTANGS

"Elkmont (7-5) ended their season Friday night with a 42-0 loss to Madison Academy (10-2).
Elkmont generated only 139 yards of total offense on the night. Madison Academy, on the other hand, generated touchdowns on four of their six first-half possessions to take a 28-0 lead at halftime.
Elkmont put together two second-half drives deep into Madison Academy territory but both stalled. Madison Academy added two late fourth-quarter touchdowns for the 42-0 victory.
The Red Devils could not contain Madison Academy quarterback James Olive, a difference maker who rushed for two touchdowns (7 yards each) and passed for two scores to Nicholas Haas (17 and 25 yards).
Elkmont senior linebacker Cody Martin was a bright spot with two pass interceptions.
The Red Devils played almost the entire game without senior running back/defensive back Skyler Gant who was injured on Elkmont’s first offensive play."

IT HAD TO END SOME TIME

Elkmont wrapped up its season with a loss to Madison Academy in the second round of the playoffs.  It was a disappointing loss and did not represent what a good team the Red Devils are.  The Hill Spirit is very proud of the team and the season they put together.  There are so many great memories.  Wish all the seniors the best as this chapter in their life ends and the next one begins.

STUDENT SECTION PLANNED FOR PLAYOFF GAME

"THE CREW" IS COMING BACK TO ELKMONT.  The crew chiefs are Howard Petty and Layne Smith.  They want as many people as possible to join the student section for Elkmont's 2nd round playoff game vs Madison Academy.  They want to "BLACK OUT" the Mustangs so come dressed in  ever fashionable black.  Be sure to get to the game early so you can sit in the "CREW" section. Gates open at 5:00 pm - be sure to be there by 6 pm to be assured a seat.  Ask Howard and Layne for more info.

If you are a student and have a friend on the team, grab some buddies and come to the game. Get there about 5:30 and sit as a group; the more the better Be wild, be crazy, be loud, dress up, be noticed, have fun - the team will appreciate your support. Us old people tend to worry about what others might think if we aren't dignified but you are young and don't care about such foolish things. Elkmont has some fun student sections in the past.

Think of it as college game day fan training for when you go to college.

GO ELKMONT RED DEVILS!

MADISON ACADEMY MUSTANGS - PRE GAME LOOK

What to expect: The Mustangs have gone 31-6 in Cohu’s first three seasons, winning more games in a three-year stretch than any other period since the program began in 1963 and winning region titles each time.  The offense is well balanced, able to score off the run or pass.  The offensive line is experienced and larger than the Elkmont Red Devil defensive line. It will be a battle for the defense to keep the Mustangs from opening big holes to run the offense through.

Returning starters: 12

Back on offense: QB Hunter Olive (Sr./6-0/170/All-Region WR/46 REC/816 YDS), RB Marcus Sease (Sr./6-2/205), RB Khyle Jackson (Sr./6-1/190), OL Cole Swearengen (Jr./6-0/280/All-Region), OL Cole Corder (Jr./5-10/250/All-Region), OL Blake Copeland (Sr./5-10/195), OL Nick Holman (Soph./6-2/215)
Back on defense: DB Olive (80 TKLS/5 INT), LB Sease (123 TKLS/All-Region), DB Jackson (81 TKLS/All-Region), DL Swearengen, DL Corder, DL Holman, LB Copeland

Top newcomers: RB/DB Kerryon Johnson (Fr./6-0/170), LB Taylor Ernst (Sr./5-10/200), RB/LB Taylor Ziak (Soph./5-10/185), WR/DB Chandler Trach (Jr./5-8/155), OL/DL Frank Williams (Soph./6-0/240)
