TIGERS TOO MUCH FOR RED DEVILS

ELKMONT — Lauderdale County racked up almost 600 rushing yards while its defense forced eight turnovers in a 57-14 road win over Elkmont on Friday.
LCHS led just 20-14 before reeling off 30 third-quarter points to improve to 8-1 on the season and 6-1 in Class 3A Region 8 play.

Elkmont (2-7) struck first, using an offensive that didn’t attempt a rush until the 10:42 mark of the second quarter. Quarterback Bryant Wales found Matthew Barnes for an 11-yard touchdown with 9:54 remaining in the opening quarter.

Lauderdale County answered with 20 straight points. Grisham scored on the second play from scrimmage with a 71-yard scamper to tie the game at 7. After an interception gave LCHS a short field to work with, a 60-yard touchdown run by Grisham gave the Tigers a 14-7 lead with 3:17 remaining in the first quarter.
The Tigers totaled six interceptions, including a pick-six by Brian Puckett early in the second quarter. The failed PAT left the score at 20-7 at the half.
Elkmont again struck first in the third quarter, capping a four-play, 45-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Wales to Rhett Bailey.

SENIOR NIGHT THIS FRIDAY

Elkmont football is having Senior night to recognize the seniors this Friday.  This is their last home game for the 2012 season. They are playing the 5th ranked Lauderdale County Tigers.  Win or lose, senior night is always a very emotional night at Boss Hill Stadium.  Good luck Red Devils.

Lauderdale County (7-1, 5-1) at Elkmont (2-6, 2-4)

Where: Boss Hill Stadium
What: Class 3A, Region 8
Last season: Lauderdale County won 34-14
The skinny: Lauderdale County must win or hope for a Madison Academy loss to claim the region title. Elkmont can only hope to play spoiler. Josh Ferrazas’ late touchdown was the Red Devils’ only score in a 55-6 loss to Deshler last week. Lauderdale County held Westminster Christian to -1 yard of offense the first half of a 48-7 rout last week. Lauderdale County leads all-time series 17-6.
The Daily picks: Lauderdale County 28, Elkmont 6

DESHLER TOO MUCH FOR ELKMONT

Deshler  had faced Elkmont only once before, but 74 years later the results were eerily similar as the ninth-ranked Tigers overwhelmed the Red Devils 56-6 in Class 3A, Region 8 action at Howard Chappell Stadium Friday night.

Deshler (5-3, 4-2 Region 8) won the previous matchup 53-7 in 1938, but the Tigers’ hybrid option offense sputtered in the first quarter against a stubborn Red Devils defense. Then Deshler unspooled eight consecutive scoring drives that spanned the second and third quarters to lead 56-0 heading into the final period.

Wingback Dameon Fuqua awakened the Tigers’ attack with a 41-yard scamper and fullback Terrance Byrd scooted free for a 44-yard score in the second quarter. After a TD run from the Elkmont 1-yard line and a 9-yard touchdown pass from Justin Cantrell to Wilmon Simpson, Deshler took a 28-0 lead into halftime.

The Tigers, who finished with 414 yards of total offense, added four more touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Elkmont junior Josh Ferrazas spoiled the shutout attempt with a 2-yard TD run midway through the final quarter to make the final score 56-6.

Dustin Ward led the Red Devils with 12 carries for 33 yards, while Fuqua paced the Tigers with a pair of touchdowns and seven carries for 110 yards.

Cantrell finished 8 of 17 for 129 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Elkmont’s Bryant Wales completed 6 of 14 passes for 30 yards and three interceptions.

Both teams continue region play this Friday as Elkmont (2-6, 1-5) hosts Lauderdale County and Deshler travels to Clements.

ELKMONT MIDGETS WIN AGAIN

The Red Devil Midgets bounced back from back-to-back losses to Athens with a 13-0 victory over the Tanner Rattlers last Saturday, improving their record to 3-3.  Elkmont’s defense dominated the Rattlers, keeping Tanner’s big linemen in check and eliminating Tanner’s running game.  Elkmont’s first touchdown was scored by running back Xavier Watkins as he carried most of Tanner’s defensive linemen into the end zone on a powerful run up the middle, reminding the Alabama fans in the stands of a young Trent Richardson.  A quick snap count resulted in an easy touchdown for speedy Isaiah Sutherland on a quarterback keeper, with Watkins scoring the extra point.  While he did not make it into the endzone, Elkmont’s top offensive producer against Tanner was Masin Morris.  Morris, normally a standout on defense, used his quick feet and slashing running style to move Elkmont down the field, setting up both of Elkmont’s touchdowns.

The Midgets’ last game is this Saturday, 12:30 pm, at Ardmore Park against Ardmore.

ELKMONT RED DEVILS HAVE BIG NIGHT

Elkmont used a barrage of running backs that rushed for more than 200 yards in a 24-8 win over Clements Friday. The Red Devils had four players rush for at least 20 yards to pick up their second region win of the season.

The visitors jumped out to an early lead when running back Dustin Ward reached paydirt with a 14 yard run on the Red Devils’ first possession. Elkmont marched down the field again on their next possession with big runs by Chase Renew and Jared Bailey. With quarterback Bryant Wales lined up at wide-out, the Red Devils used a double reverse pass from Wales to Ben Ferguson for a 28 yard score.

Josh Ferrazzas opened up the second half with a bang for the Devils, taking the kickoff 82 yards to the end zone. Later in the quarter, sophomore kicker Alexis Hernandez showed off his great leg with a 37 yard field goal. But Clements showed no signs of quitting. The Colts’ got on the board in the fourth quarter when Jimmy Marsh broke four tackles down the sideline for a 13 yard score.

Renew and Ward led the rushing attack for the Red Devils. Renew collected 64 yards on 8 carries while Ward carried 5 times for 55 yards and a score. Colts running back Demarcus Johnson rushed for 32 yards on 10 tries. Wales completed one pass out of eleven throws, with a 28 yard touchdown. Marcus Mcnaughton threw for 5-11 and 15 yards. Marsh completed 2 of his 4 passes for 15 yards. Ferguson caught the only ball of the night for the Red Devils for a 28 yard touchdown. Johnson finished with 3 catches and 16 yards.

ELKMONT VS CLEMENTS FOOTBALL PREVIEW

GRIDIRON PREDICTIONS:

Athens News Courier:  Elkmont (1-5, 1-3) at Clements (0-6, 0-4)

7 p.m., M.T. Newman Stadium

Preview:  Something has to give between a pair of teams that bring one combined win into this 3A Region 8 contest. Clements’ closest games this season have been against West Limestone and Ardmore and this intra-county game should be no different. After throwing five touchdown passes in the opening game, Colts’ quarterback Marcus McNaughton has gotten back on track, throwing touchdown passes in back-to-back games. Elkmont travels across the county trying to rebound from a 62-0 loss to Madison Academy. Elkmont has won 13 of the last 15 in the series.

Series history: Clements leads 26-22.

Last year: Elkmont won 45-14.

News Courier Prediction: Clements 27, Elkmont 20

Decatur Daily:

The skinny: Desperate describes both squads. Elkmont is coming off a 63-0 loss last week to powerhouse Madison Academy. Clements lost 45-7 to Westminster Christian. Jimmy Marsh’s 22-yard run in the third quarter was the Colts’ only highlight in the loss. Clements leads the all-time series 26-22.

The Daily picks: Elkmont 7, Clements 6

RED DEVILS FROZEN OUT BY MADISON ACADEMY

Not much to say here; the homecoming court was beautiful.  However, the football Red Devils couldn't get the ball past the goal line.  Madison Academy turned up the heat and put up a 62 - 0 victory.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUMBLE AGAINST WEST LIMESTONE

The Middle School game was rescheduled to Tuesday instead of playing on a muddy field Monday. Haven't seen the score but the Hillspirit did pick up that the Middle School lost from a facebook post. Wish I had something more to post but here is the post:

Good game EHS MS. Tough loss! Learn from tonight and move on to Saturday and BEAT EAST!!  Hold your heads high! We are proud of you!

Pictures of the game are available from Down  Home Portraits.

The East Limestone game has been moved to Saturday with a kickoff time of 3 pm.

ATHENS BEAT ELMONT MIDGETS 6 - 0

Just one play.  That was the difference in the Elkmont vs. Athens-1 Midget game last Saturday.

Deadlocked 0-0 at halftime, the Athens coach was animated on his side of the field.  The Elkmont coaches had a different, business-like demeanor on their sideline, telling the kids to “just keep doing what you are doing.  Move the chains on offense, and keep stopping them on defense.”  And that’s what they did…except for just one play.
The Elkmont defense kept the speedy Athens running backs in-check, but there was that one play, the quarterback sweep that found the endzone resulting in a 6-0 Athens victory.
After the game, Midgets’ Assistant Coach Nick Fraser said, “It was a tough loss for the Elkmont Midgets, but our kids hung in there.  Athens knew we were there all day long.  I am proud of my guys.  They have more heart than any other team I have ever coached.”  Masin Morris led the Elkmont defense in tackles, and running back Xavier Watkins led the team in total yards on offense.

Elkmont plays Athens-2 at 4:00 pm on Saturday.

HOMECOMING THIS FRIDAY

Elkmont's homecoming game is this Friday.  The Red Devils face a   tough opponent in the ranked Madison Academy Mustangs.

Predictions:

Decatur Daily: Madison Academy (3-2, 3-0) at Elkmont (1-4, 1-2)

Where: Boss Hill Stadium
What: Class 3A, Region 8 game
Last season: Madison Academy won 42-0

The skinny: Madison Academy has emerged as the frontrunner in a tough Region 8. … The Mustangs were last season’s Class 3A state runner-up. … Madison Academy running back Kerryon Johnson is considered one of the state’s top prospects in the 2015 class. He rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown on eight carries last week in a 42-21 loss at Cullman. … A young Elkmont team has struggled at times this season as it tries to build for the future.

… Last week in a loss against West Limestone, wide receiver Rhett Bailey returned to the field for the first time since 2010. Bailey, who spent 2011 battling cancer, caught a touchdown pass on his first play. … Madison Academy leads the all-time series 14-9.

The Daily picks: Madison Academy 42, Elkmont 14

Athens News Courier:    Madison Academy (3-2, 2-0) at Elkmont (1-4, 1-2)

7 p.m., Boss Hill Stadium
Preview: Although its record won’t show it, Madison Academy might be the best team in Class 3A. The Mustangs only losses have come against the top team in 2A (Tanner) and a top 10 5A team (Cullman). Running back Kerryon Johnson is a threat to score every time he touches the ball for Madison Academy. Elkmont will have to focus on Johnson while hoping the Mustangs’ other weapons don’t kill them. These teams met in the second round of the playoff last season.

Series record: Madison Academy leads 14-9

Last year: Madison County won 42-0 in the 2nd round of the playoffs

News Courier prediction: Madison Academy 35, Elkmont 14
