FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS - ELKMONT VS LAUDERDALE COUNTY

The Red Devils will be traveling to Rogersville to play the Tigers.  The Tigers are a bigger, stronger version of the Deshler team that Elkmont played last Friday.  Most of Lauderdale's offense is centered around the run.  The formula to getting a win is the same as last week.  If Elkmont can stop the run and keep their turnovers down, they may be able to keep the game close enough to give the Red Devils a chance at an upset.  Kickoff will be at 7 pm under a clear, cold evening sky.

The skinny: Elkmont gets the award for being the underdog that keeps hanging around. Despite the losing record, Elkmont could finish tied for third or fourth place in the region. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, tiebreakers will keep them out of the playoffs.

ELKMONT MIDGETS RATTLE TANNER

Elkmont's much improved offensive line paved the way for four rushing touchdowns, keeping the Midget Red Devils' playoff hopes alive with a 27-6 win over the Tanner Rattlers. 

Running back Brody Eckstein pounded up the middle while quarterback Isaiah Sutherland used some muscle of his own as both got into the end zone twice.  Speedster Masin Morris added some dazzling runs to excite the crowd and move the chains.  Sutherland continued to show his arm strength with a 35 yard pass to tight end Josh Burrows that set up one of Elkmont's trips to the end zone.  

Defensively, other than giving up a long run for Tanner's only score, the Red Devils did a great job of containing the Rattlers' speed.  By bottling up the backs behind the line of scrimmage,  Elkmont had several tackles that produced Rattler losses.  In what was likely the defensive play of the game, nose guard Josh Turner exploded into the backfield for a bone-crushing tackle worthy of an ESPN highlight film.

The Red Devils play the Clements Colts on October 26 at 5:00 pm at Athens Middle School.

RUNNING TIGERS TOO MUCH FOR ELKMONT

A powerful rushing attack, lead by Terrance Byrd and Chander Brown, lead Deshler to a 49-14 win over Elkmont and gave the Tigers a hold on fourth place in the region. Deshler entered the region matchup a game behind Elkmont in fifth place in the region.

 

However, 21 first half points and 28 points in the third quarter was too much for the Red Devils to handle and Deshler took over sole position of fourth place in the region.  Byrd rushed for 162 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown for the Tigers, while Brown finished with 154 yards and three touchdowns.

Deshler, 5-3, 3-3, took a quick lead on two first-quarter Brown touchdowns runs of 27 yards and eight yards. Carson McGregory kicked the first of seven extra points in the opening quarter.  In the second quarter quarterback Sam Howard passed 20 yards to Brown pushing the lead to 21-0 at the half.  

On the first play of the second half, Byrd broke free and raced 70 yards for a touchdown. The kick made it 28-0.  Minutes later, after the Tiger’s defense held Elkmont, Howard connected with B.J. Bailey for 20 yards and a touchdown. Moments later the Howard to Bailey combination connected again this time for 16 yards.

Near the end of the third-quarter, Maleek Qualls intersection a Elkmont pass and ran 45 yards for a touchdown.

Elkmont, 3-5, 3-3, scored twice in the fourth quarter as Jarod Bailey ran for a one-yard touchdown. Then with just over three minutes left to play, Drew Panky scored on a five-yard run. The score was set up by a Deshler fumble.

Elkmont will be traveling to Lauderdale County next week.

Injury Report: 
Rhett has a strained and bruised tendon in knee. Lots of swelling, but thank goodness nothing is torn. He also has a Grade 2 sprained ankle. Going into a boot. Time, rest, ice, therapy and he should be good as new in a couple of weeks!!!!

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS - ELKMONT VS DESHLER

Elkmont High School Homecoming is here. Wonderful parade yesterday and congrads to the homecoming court. The Red Devils had a great game last week against the Clements Colts. Tonight will be an uphill battle for Elkmont.  

The Deshler  Tigers are a stronge team.  Offense is heavy on the ground game.  Defense is best at stopping the run.  However, they have a tendency to be up and down.    If Elkmont can stop the run and keep their turnovers down, they may be able to keep the game close enough to give the Red Devils a chance at an upset.  The weather is going to be beautiful with temps in the upper 50s for  a 7 pm kickoff.  It will be clouding up during the game.  Best of luck to our Red Devils.   Go Big Red!!!

Predictions:

Athens News Courier - Fearless Prediction Elkmont controls its own destiny when it welcomes Deshler to town Friday. The Red Devils are currently tied for third in 3A Region 8 with games against Lauderdale County (5-2, 3-2) and fourth-place Deshler remaining.

A loss Friday would eliminate Deshler from playoff contention. The Tigers have made the playoffs for 29 consecutive seasons.

The skinny: It’s the eighth week of the season and the Elkmont Red Devils are still in the hunt for a spot in the playoffs. Lauderdale County and Elkmont are tied for third in the region with 3-2 records. Right behind is Lauderdale County with a 2-3 region record. Elkmont controls its destiny with Deshler tonight and Lauderdale County next week. Last week, Deshler running back Ratavious Ricks had 162 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries. Elkmont is coming off a 35-6 win over Clements. Mike Tucker had 19 carries for 140 yards and three touchdowns.
