• After two quarters, Deshler appeared poised to hand Colbert County its first loss of the season. Ricks ran for touchdown runs of 38 and 40 yards, and the Tigers thwarted two Colbert County red-zone opportunities by holding the Indians to a pair of field goals. Ricks finished with 162 yards on nine carries to lead Deshler, which also got 69 yards from Terrance Byrd.

• Clinging to an 18-14 lead with two minutes remaining in the third quarter, Colbert County put together a methodical 17-play scoring drive that gave the Indians a two-score lead and all but broke Deshler (4-3, 2-3). Carpenter carried the ball 11 times on the drive, and his second fourth-down conversion — from fourth-and-1 at the 4 — set up quarterback Tyler Jeffrey’s 2-yard keeper for a score on the next play.

  Another three-and-out for Deshler followed to set up the decisive 17-play scoring drive during which Deshler saw two of its defensive starters exit with injuries.
  “We never could catch our base and get our defense to come back together. We started missing those cogs in there. When you miss those, it just doesn’t click,” Deshler coach John Mothershed said. “But that doesn’t take away anything from Colbert County did.”
  
   

ELKMONT LOCKS OUT EAST 2 INDIANS

With a balanced running and passing attack, the Elkmont Midgets beat the East 2 Indians 19 - 0.  Elkmont consistently moved the ball on Brody Eckstein's pounding runs up the middle and the usual speedsters picking up yards along the sidelines.   Masin Morris got into the endzone first on a short run, allowing Elkmont to take a 6-0 lead into halftime. East 2 kicked off to start the second half.  Josh Burrows' 60 yard kickoff return sprung by a huge block from Jacob Rhineheimer, capped off by Isaiah Sutherland's extra point, put the Red Devils up 13-0. In the fourth quarter, Blake Brown ran untouched into the endzone for the final score.  

On the other side of the ball, the spirited Red Devil defense dominated the line of scrimmage, consistently pressuring the quarterback and tackling the Indians' backs for losses.  After the game, the coaches credited the improved play of the offensive line for the victory.  The Midgets' next game is against the Tanner Rattlers at 4:00 pm on 10/19 at Athens Middle School.

ELKMONT BREAKS COLTS

Another win for the Red Devils Friday night as they beat Clements Colts 35-6.  There was lots of excitement starting with the mini-cheerleaders showing off their pregame show.  These young ladies had attended the Elkmont cheer camp for kindergarten throught sixth grade.

Under a beautiful fall evening sky, the Red Devils came out ready to play. The Elkmont defense quickly put up a fire wall that stopped the Clements Colts in their tracks.  Elkmont got the first score with a one yard run from Jared Bailey, followed by an Alexis Hernandez point after touchdown (PAT) to make it 7 - 0.  

Mike Tucker got the next two scores. The first was a two yard run into the end zone and the second was a nine yard run.   Alexis kicked it through the goal post on each PAT and added an extra point to each touchdown.

Red Devils next score was by Zeb Pankey on a twenty-two yard run, with a good PAT by Hernandez.  Clements got on the score board with a five yard run by Carson Cook. The Colts went for 2 pt conversion but the Elkmont defense held and it was unsuccessful.  The Red Devils' final score was by a Mike Tucker thirteen yard run.  The PAT was good.

The Elkmont Red Devils have a short fall break before starting homecoming activities next week.

They will be hosting Deshler, October 18.  The Elkmont Homecoming Parade will be next Thursday.  It will begin at the Piggly Wiggly Shopping Center on HWY 127 and will end at the softball field parking lot. (The Christmas Parade route in reverse) First, Second, and Third Place Prizes will be awarded to the top entries. There will be a community Pep Rally at the stadium immediately following the parade.  

TENNESSEE VALLEY (WHNT) – Time to get voting again! This week, the competition is between Danville, Elkmont, Priceville and Fyffe.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS - ELKMONT VS CLEMENTS

The Clements Colts will be coming to the hilltop this evening. The Red Devils took it on the chin last week but will turn it around.  Controlling the football and keeping turnovers down will help Elkmont have a much better game.  The weather is going to be beautiful with temps in the middle 60s for  a 7 pm kickoff.  The Hill Spirit thinks the The Red Devils will add another win to their season  tonight.  Go Big Red!!!

Both those schools are next on Elkmont’s schedule. Clements holds a 26-23 lead in the series.

MEET THE CLEMENTS COLTS

Offense

Beavers brings a strong football resume to Clements, but flipping a program that's gone 3-27 in the past three seasons is not going to happen overnight.  The first overhaul Beavers made was Clements' offense. Since 2005, with former coaches Barry Daniel, Forest Williams and Michael Brown, the Colts primarily used a pass-oriented spread scheme.  These days, the spread formation has been swapped for the run-oriented Wing-T.  "I think that suits the kind of kids we have here," Beavers said. "The kids realize what we're doing, and they're making progress. The big issue right now is we don't have depth."  When discussing his new team, Beavers pointed out multiple times that Clements has some speed and athleticism at the offensive skill positions. With tailback Demarcus Johnson and wingback Earl Thompson returning, along with Tremaine Smith at fullback, the Colts expect a nice mix of speed and power in the running game.  "What we're doing on offense with the Wing-T, it's completely different from anything we've done here," Kilgore said. "But I think it suits us well. I like what I've seen. Marsh agreed.  "We're going to get the ball in a lot of different people's hands," he said. "It's a little bit of an adjustment, but we're catching on."

Defense

Based on last season's results, if Clements is going to climb the ladder in Class 3A, Region 8, the Colts' defense has to drastically improve.  In 2012, Clements gave up 41.7 points per game. Correcting that trend was addressed during the offseason in the weight room.  "When I first got here, we were pathetically weak," Beavers said. "The kids have worked hard and made major strides in that area, but we're still nowhere close to where we need to be. We have gotten stronger, and we're starting to develop some toughness, but like anything else, this is a process. You've got to figure out how to get from Point A to B, and we're figuring it out."

Prognosis

For Clements, most of the news this offseason has been positive. Clements finished last season with 19 players. That number has grown to 38. Beavers also has noticed a competitive spirit developing.
"The kids are learning to compete," he said. "And when you're trying to turn something around, that's the most important part. It seems like everyone is buying in. You can tell they want to turn things around and start something special. So far, I've been pleased with the progress." He said his coaching staff, which includes offensive coordinator Zach Meadows, defensive coordinator Daniel Garrett and special teams coach Nathan Sawyer, is focused on continuing the improvement shown from the first day of spring and throughout the summer as Clements prepares for the gauntlet of Class 3A, Region 8.  “Right now the players are getting after it in practice, and we’re focused on one play at a time,” said Beavers. “Region 8 is the toughest region in the state but if you get into the playoffs, then you have a good chance to advance to the second round of the playoffs.”

MIDGETS IMPROVING

The Midget schedule has been tough, starting the season against the top three teams in the league. But, in yesterday's 27-0 loss to East 1, the Red Devils made significant progress on offense, moving the ball down the field and moving the chains consistently.  Long runs by Isaiah Sutherland and Masin Morris, coupled with a Josh Burrows reception on a perfectly spiraled Sutherland pass, highlighted the offensive effort.  The offensive line was much improved, consistently making key blocks that allowed the Red Devils to move the chains.  

On the other side of the ball, Paul Gooch anchored the defense from his linebacker position.  Elkmont plays East 2 next Saturday at 4:00 at Athens Middle School.

MUSTANGS RUN AWAY FROM ELKMONT

 

Madison Academy defeated Elkmont 56-14 on Friday. The Mustangs remained unbeaten with the Class 3A, Region 8 win. Elkmont trailed 28-0 after the first quarter and 42-0 at halftime. 

Both Elkmont touchdowns came in the fourth quarter. Mike Tucker had a 6-yard run and defensive end Joshua Carter returned a fumble 80 yards for a touchdown.

September 27
Madison Academy snapped the four-game winning streak of Cullman with a 28-10 victory on Saturday.  After taking the lead on a rushing touchdown in the first quarter, the Mustangs led 14-10 at the half.  Madison Academy expanded its lead to 11 points entering the fourth quarter. MA's lone score in the quarter came on a touchdown run.  With the win the Madison school extended its winning streak to five games. Madison Academy defeated Deshler 42-14 last week.  Cullman's lone touchdown came on an 18-yard pass in the second quarter.
 
September 20
 The Madison Academy Mustangsfootball overcame the visiting Deshler Tigers , 42-14 in Friday's league bout.  In their next game, the Mustangs face the Cullman Bearcats  in a non-league bout, on Friday, September 27. Madison Academy will attempt to move on its 4-0 season record. The Bearcats enter the bout with a 4-0 record after their 14-6 league win over Hartselle.

JUST TWO POINTS ....

A few plays into the second half of Friday’s rivalry game between West Limestone and Elkmont, it was clear the last team with the ball would win the game. West Limestone’s players scraped and clawed for four quarters to make sure they were the ones holding onto that ball when the clock hit zero.  A back-and-forth game with four lead changes in the second half saw the Wildcats emerge 25-23 victors over Elkmont in a non-region game at James Kennemer Stadium.

Trailing 23-19 mid way through the fourth quarter, Logan Pugh gave West the go ahead touchdown on a 42-yard touchdown after Elkmont had just stopped the Wildcats on fourth and goal from the 1-yard line.

West Limestone’s defense tightened up to force an interception on Elkmont’s final drive. The turnover nearly gave Elkmont a gift on the fourth down play, however, when the ball was fumbled after the interception and the visitors nearly recovered past the first down marker.  Just as they had all game, the Wildcats fought at the bottom of the pile to emerge with the ball and ran out the clock for the win.

West Limestone’s defensive stop in the final minutes followed a third quarter scoring spree from both teams. Trailing 13-10 at halftime, Elkmont put together a seven play 64 yard drive, capped by a Jared Bailey 1-yard plunge.


Elkmont’s first lead of the game didn’t last long as West answered with a 63 yard drive of its own. Tucker McCormick’s 13 yard run put the home team back in the lead 19-17. McCormick carried the load on the scoring drive that included seven runs, mostly up the gut of the Red Devils defense.
Not to be outdone, Elkmont’s Mike Tucker ripped off a 65-yard run on the next play from scrimmage and scored from two yards out on the next play to regain the lead with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter.

Tucker led Elkmont with 12 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown. Dillon Miller led the way for West Limestone with 13 carries for 118 yards and touchdown. McCormick added 113 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown.  Miller’s second quarter touchdown gave Elkmont a 13-3 lead early in the second quarter when it looked like the Wildcats might run away with the game.  A creative blend of play calling that included reverse passes and a fake punt ensured Elkmont stayed in the game until its ground game took over in the third quarter.

 
Elkmont’s ground game racked up 206 yards while West Limestone rushed for 316 as a team.
Elkmont had three players throw passes, most by Jordan Bailey who completed 4 of 11 pass attempts for 96 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Rhett Bailey caught two passes for 75 yards and one touchdown.

Elkmont will be traveling to Madison Academy next Friday.

MEET THE WEST LIMESTONE WILDCATS

Maybe this is the year the numbers align for the West Limestone Wildcats. After back-to-back seasons with .500 records (6-6 in 2011 and 5-5 in 2012), the most important numbers for the football program are the 10 starters back on offense and eight starters on defense.

"We have a strong senior class with many three-year starters," said Arnsparger. "Our expectations are high for this season. That's the way it should be every season." Another important number is two. It's the second season for the Wildcats to run out of the Wing-T formation after switching from a more pro-style offense. Arnsparger thinks the experience and familiarity with the Wing-T should make a difference this season."The Wing-T is easier to coach," explained Arnsparger. "There's less to teach. It's based on deception. You hope that while the defense is trying to determine who has the football, you are already past them and headed downfield. It's a perfect offense for the type of athletes we have."
 
Offense:
Drew Blakely, a junior, will take over at quarterback this season. Blakely was a starter at defensive back last season. "He's got game experience and he's a good leader," said Arnsparger. "He's perfect for the role of quarterback in our offense." Dillon Miller and Logan Pugh are the top returning rushers. Both had more than 800 yards rushing last season. The fullback is Tucker McCormick and he had more than 400 yards rushing.The offensive line is led by three-year starter Hunter Rouse. The line should push opposing defensive lineman off the ball all season long. The guards are juniors Preston Moss and Craig Chayse. Tyler Widner and Dakota Siniard are the tackles. Matthew Reyer is the tight end.

"It's going to be one of the biggest offensive lines we've ever had," said Arnsparger. "They are not just big, they are athletic. A couple of them have lost some weight and they move much better."
 
Defense:
Improvement on defense is vital for the Wildcats this season. Last season's defense gave up 355 points. Almost half of that number (169) came in the first three games of the season to rival Clements and region foes Brooks and Central Florence. The defensive line is bigger and will cut down on rushing yards. The defense is led by McCormick at middle linebacker. "We got off to a rough start last season, but I think we improved a lot by the end of the season," said McCormick. Pugh and Reyer join McCormick in the linebacker corps. The defensive line spots will be manned by Widner, Chayse, Moss and Siniard. Romero and Blakely are the cornerbacks. Mewbourn and Miller will be at the safety positions. 

"With the experience we have on offense and defense, I expect us to compete in our region," said Arnsparger. "Brooks is going have another great team. After Brooks, there are a lot of good teams, and we'll be in the mix."

With the win, West Limestone improves its record to 2-2 on the season. The Wildcats host Elkmont to confront the Red Devils in a non-league test on Friday, September 27.
