ELKMONT MIDGETS HOBBLE COLTS

It was an exciting day of football for the Elkmont Midgets this Saturday.  With the dusty air and smell of farming in Coxey, the Elkmont Midgets took the field ready for some football.  The first half of the game the midgets started off putting the first points on the board due to a turnover of downs. The offensive line did an awesome job blocking making way for big plays.

At halftime the score was Elkmont 22 Clements 12. The defensive line stayed strong the entire second half not allowing any points.  Offense and defense worked together to take control of the game and won 44 to 12.

The midgets will be working hard this week to get ready for East in Athens this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Great Game Boys!!!

ELKMONT MIDGETS BEAT BY ONE

It was a "sitting on the edge of your seat" kind of day in Athens for the Midgets this Saturday.  The Elkmont Red Devils took the field and put the first points on the board.  But by the end of the first half, Athens was ahead 13 to 6.

The Red Devils took the field in the second half ready to battle back. Our defense dug in and held Athens to only one touchdown.  The Elkmont offense fought their way back.  In the final seconds of the game, the Red Devils scored making the score Athens 20,  Elkmont 19.  Our Midgets never gave up!

They stayed together as a team, dominated the second half, and brought the game close in final seconds.  Great game guys!  They will continue this week getting ready to play Clement this Saturday, September 27 at 10:30 a.m. at Clements.  Go Devils!

ELKMONT MIDGETS SHUT OUT TANNER

The Elkmont Midgets started their season off with a win over the Tanner Rattlers.   After missing last week’s game due to weather, the midgets worked together as a team on offense and defense.

The offensive line did extremely well blocking to achieve four touchdowns.  The defensive line were on their toes during the entire game, only allowing Tanner to make two first downs.  The midgets ended the game with a 26-0 victory over the Tanner Rattlers.

They have been working very hard in practice to accomplish their first win of the season.  They will continue to work hard this week to get ready for the Golden Eagles at 2:40 p.m. this Saturday the 20th.  Go Devils!

MIDGET RED DEVILS END SEASON WITH A WIN

The Midgets finished their season with an exclamation point, defeating rival Ardmore 20-6.  The Red Devils dominated on defense, forcing four Tiger turnovers.  Xavier Watkins and Joe Joe Russell each had an interception, and the Red Devils recovered two fumbles.

Elkmont’s first possession resulted in a quick touchdown on a long run down the sideline by Watkins.  On Ardmore’s next possession, defensive end Josh Burrows recovered a fumble deep in Ardmore territory to set up Elkmont’s second touchdown on a run up the middle by quarterback Isaiah Sutherland.  Watkins ran for his second touchdown before half-time, and the extra point by Skyler Morris resulted in a 20-0 half-time lead.  Ardmore’s lone score came late in the game, but the extra point was denied when the Tiger running back was cut down by Burrows in the back field.  Afterwards, the coaches congratulated the offensive line for a tremendous performance, especially in the first half, and praised the defense as a whole for its physical play against Ardmore and throughout the season.

The Midgets ended their season with a record of 4-3, recording victories against Clements, West Limestone, Tanner, and Ardmore.  Their only losses were to East Limestone and Athens.  The Midget All-Star game is scheduled for November 10, 2012, at 4:00 pm.

Masin Morris, Isaiah Sutherland, Coby Scroggins, Ben Hanback, Xavier Watkins, James Walts, Joe Joe Russell, and Nicholas Black played their last game as Midgets, dominating Ardmore 20-6.

ELKMONT MIDGETS WIN AGAIN

The Red Devil Midgets bounced back from back-to-back losses to Athens with a 13-0 victory over the Tanner Rattlers last Saturday, improving their record to 3-3.  Elkmont’s defense dominated the Rattlers, keeping Tanner’s big linemen in check and eliminating Tanner’s running game.  Elkmont’s first touchdown was scored by running back Xavier Watkins as he carried most of Tanner’s defensive linemen into the end zone on a powerful run up the middle, reminding the Alabama fans in the stands of a young Trent Richardson.  A quick snap count resulted in an easy touchdown for speedy Isaiah Sutherland on a quarterback keeper, with Watkins scoring the extra point.  While he did not make it into the endzone, Elkmont’s top offensive producer against Tanner was Masin Morris.  Morris, normally a standout on defense, used his quick feet and slashing running style to move Elkmont down the field, setting up both of Elkmont’s touchdowns.

The Midgets’ last game is this Saturday, 12:30 pm, at Ardmore Park against Ardmore.

ATHENS BEAT ELMONT MIDGETS 6 - 0

Just one play.  That was the difference in the Elkmont vs. Athens-1 Midget game last Saturday.

Deadlocked 0-0 at halftime, the Athens coach was animated on his side of the field.  The Elkmont coaches had a different, business-like demeanor on their sideline, telling the kids to “just keep doing what you are doing.  Move the chains on offense, and keep stopping them on defense.”  And that’s what they did…except for just one play.
The Elkmont defense kept the speedy Athens running backs in-check, but there was that one play, the quarterback sweep that found the endzone resulting in a 6-0 Athens victory.
After the game, Midgets’ Assistant Coach Nick Fraser said, “It was a tough loss for the Elkmont Midgets, but our kids hung in there.  Athens knew we were there all day long.  I am proud of my guys.  They have more heart than any other team I have ever coached.”  Masin Morris led the Elkmont defense in tackles, and running back Xavier Watkins led the team in total yards on offense.

Elkmont plays Athens-2 at 4:00 pm on Saturday.

MIDGET RED DEVILS WIN 19 - 18

Trailing 12-0 to West Limestone at half-time, the Elkmont Midgets knew that they would have to rely on their proven strengths and also throw in a little trickery if they were going to come from behind to secure a victory on a weekend that all other Elkmont football teams had won – and won big.

Running back Xavier Watkins rushed for over 100 yards in the second half alone, scoring two touchdowns to tie the score, 12-12, at the end of regulation.  Elkmont started overtime on offense.  Stymied on three rushing attempts, the Red Devils looked to pass into the end zone on fourth down.  West Limestone had blanketed the receivers, however, and veteran quarterback Isaiah Sutherland headed for daylight, running into the endzone untouched to give the Red Devils a 18-12 lead.  Going for the extra point, everyone expected either Watkins or Sutherland to lead the team into the endzone as they have done all season; but, the time was right for some trickery.  Traditionally an offensive lineman, Josh Burrows had lined up all day as a blocking tight end.  With the game on the line, Burrows’ number was called; he ran a tight end sweep into the end zone for the extra point, pushing the score to 19-12.

Elkmont had little time to celebrate, turning its attention to defending the goal line in its first overtime game of the season. On its second play from scrimmage, West Limestone made it into the endzone.  Electing to go for two points and the win, the Wildcats ran a sweep to the left.  Fighting off a blocker for ten yards, Masin Morris finally broke free and stopped the West Limestone running back just shy of the goal line, securing the Red Devils' 19-18 victory by a matter of inches.

The Midgets (2-1) play again at noon on Saturday against Athens.
