WILSON WARRIORS/ ELKMONT RED DEVILS RESULTS

Rough night for the Elkmont Red Devils on September 11.  It is important to remember "rebuilding, rebuilding" after last year's successful season.  The Red Devils are looking to collect experience and maturity this year, no pain - no gain.

FLORENCE DAILY TIMES:
The Wilson Warriors were firing on all cylinders in an emphatic 55-0 victory over region foe Elkmont on Friday.  The Warriors finished with 541 total yards while holding the Red Devils to 128. The Warriors carried out a balanced attack, finishing with 331 yards rushing and 210 passing.

Wilson held Elkmont to two yards per carry in the shutout.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

The Elkmont Red Devils will be traveling to Wilson High School for tonight's game @ 7 pm.  The Warriors selected Elkmont for their homecoming game.  This will make the game longer than normal so plan accordingly. It may be midnight before you get home.

A strong cold front will approach the Valley from the northwest on today.  Clouds increase later this afternoon with scattered showers and few storms  between 3 PM and 10 PM with the cold front.  The rain should be east of I-65 before kickoff but you might to take rain gear for this one.

The skinny: Elkmont has been competitive in its first two games but does not have a win to show for it. … Red Devils lost 33-20 to Class 5A Ardmore and played Brooks tough last week, falling 28-13. … Wilson is coming off a tough 27-17 comeback win over Rogers. The Warriors scored twice in the final 5:13 to pull out the win. … Tucker Brown flipped a 48-yard TD pass to Russell DePoyster for the go-ahead touchdown. … Eli Hobbs and Jordan Nelson had touchdown runs for Elkmont against Brooks last week. … Wilson is 4-2 all-time against Elkmont and won 33-7 in 2014.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE WILSON WARRIORS?

WILSON WARRIORS: The Warriors have emerged as a legitimate contender in Class 4A, Region 8. The recent success reached a crescendo in 2014 as Wilson posted a 9-2 record and earned a trip to the playoffs.   

 

OFFENSE:

Graduation took a toll. Gone are the three all-state honorable mention selections. Brown saying the offense will have to grind out scoring drives instead of big plays. “There won’t be as many two- and three-play drives,” he said. “We’re still going to do what we do, but it might take us 15 plays (to score). It will be a slower type game — more methodical downhill running.”

Kyler Stults and Tucker Brown are the leaders to take over at quarterback. Stults, a senior, has been starting since the eighth grade in some capacity and will be in the lineup somewhere if Brown wins the job.  Carries will be divided among several players. Senior Broc Delia, who also has been starting since the 8th grade, returns at fullback. Larry Decatur, Bryce Black and Gator Hanohano will also see plenty of action.  Jordan Depoyster is looked to be the playmaker at wide receiver.

The offensive line will feature Dakota McCravey, who is starting for the third year, and Connor Hall, who is starting for the second year. Harley Blevins, Aaron Sheffield and Austin Carter are in the mix to fill out the rest of the line.

DEFENSE:

Delia and Stults comprise a portion of what should be a good linebacking situation. Hanohano, Chance Young, Sam Hopson, Skyler Edwards, Javen Clanton and Nick Phillips also are vying for time.  Lex Morgan, a junior defensive lineman, is already attracting attention from Division I schools. Colton Thorn and Tyler Barnett, who has one of the team’s top motors according to Brown, add quality to the defensive line.  The secondary will be mostly new, with Black, Jay Decatur and Avery Moates having standing out in fall practice.

Extra Points

Wilson might lack the big-play potential that Futrell added, but Brown likes the talent level and mindset of the Warriors.

Brown expects the Class 4A, Region 8 race to be hard fought for the four playoff berths. Deshler, always the favorite, lost 19 starters from last year’s state runner-up team.

TOO MANY MISTAKES FOR ELKMONT

Penalties proved to be the deal breaker at Boss Hill Stadium Friday night.  Each time Elkmont made a mistake Friday night, Wilson made sure to capitalize on it in their crucial Class 4A, Region 8 game.  The result that in a clash of two early season unbeaten teams, it was the Warriors who emerged with a 33-7 victory at Boss Hill Stadium.  The Warriors are tied for first place in the region standings with Deshler.

 

The teams traded early touchdowns and the game was tied at 7 midway through the second quarter when Wilson began to take control.  Jason Futrell, who rushed for 117 yards on 10 carries, broke the tie with a 36-yard touchdown run. His 13-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave Wilson a 20-7 lead from which Elkmont couldn’t recover.  The Red Devils racked up 112 yards in penalties on the night, 75 of those coming in the second half. Three were for personal fouls in the fourth quarter. One led to an Elkmont player's ejection.

"Elkmont is a big physical team," Wilson coach Scott Brown said. "I'm proud of my guys for holding their composure and playing with a lot of class. That's the type of program we want at Wilson."

Wilson closed out the win with 13 points in a fourth quarter that saw Elkmont assessed for three personal foul penalties, including a player ejection.  Elkmont finished with 112 penalty yards, including 75 in the second half.

RED DEVILS TAKE ON WILSON WARRIORS FOR TOP SPOT

The Elkmont Red Devils will be hosting the Wilson Warriors.  A win will send the Hilltop boys to the top of the Region 8 standings.  The field is going to be wet so that might favor the team with the best ground game.

“Most of these guys have played a lot of football,” he said. A lot of them played as freshmen, and they took their lumps early. We’re seeing that experience pay off.”  As expected, Jason Futrell has been a workhorse with 266 yards and six touchdowns in three games. Jon Rhodes has contributed 190 yards and two TDs.
 

“Our offensive line has been playing at a high level,” said Brown, whose team plays at unbeaten Elkmont in a key Class 4A, Region 8 game Friday. “We have some older guys mixed in with some younger guys, and it’s worked out well.”

This is one of the few battles of unbeatens in the area this week. Elkmont has wins over Ardmore 49-27 and Brooks 41-35. 

Wilson running back Jason Futrell is the go-to guy for the offense that averages 36.3 points per game. The Warriors finished with 308 yards of offense in last week’s 34-17 win over Rogers. ... Wilson still has room for improvement after four turnovers and 142 penalty yards last week. ... Elkmont rattled off 41 straight points against Brooks before holding on for a 41-35 win. ... Running back Jared Bailey led Elkmont with 83 yards and three touchdowns and will test the Brooks defense. ... Wilson holds the series record at 3-2, including a 28-0 win last year.

Football tickets will be on sale today at school. Student tickets will be available for a special event price of $3. Adult tickets are $6. All tickets will cost $6 at the gate Friday night.

RHETT BAILEY RECOGNIZED

Each week during football season, the Athens News Courier selects players who are recognized for outstanding play.   Rhett Bailey among those chosen this week:

Elkmont: Rhett caught a 63-yard touchdown from his brother, Jared, in the second quarter of Friday’s loss to Wilson. Bailey led the team in receiving with three receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown.

2012 SEASON ENDS WITH LOSS AT WILSON

Elkmont may have lost its final game of the season 63-20 at Wilson, but it won’t take away from a special moment in the second quarter’s of Friday’s game. Trailing 28-0, quarterback Jared Bailey threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to brother Rhett Bailey.

It was Rhett’s sixth game back since beating cancer and the first time the two brothers had ever connected on a touchdown play. Bailey finished the game completing 5 of 12 passes for 149 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. Rhett led the team in receiving with three catches for 75 yards and a touchdown.

It was all Wilson up until that touchdown play, however. The Warriors scored four first quarter touchdowns including a reverse pass and interception for a touchdown. James Whited got things started for the home team with a 24-yard run. James Rhodes intercepted a pass for a touchdown on Elkmont’s next drive and Tre-Jon Burris made it 21-0 Wilson when he caught a 33-yard reverse pass from Brennan Parish. Burris finished the first-quarter scoring spree on a 49-yard touchdown connection from Hunter Troop.

Burris finished with three touchdown catches and two interceptions.

Elkmont managed to answer another Troop to Burris touchdown with Bailey’s second touchdown toss of the second quarter, this time to Andrew LaBathe on a 43-yard score.

Wilson Cook made it 42-14 Wilson with 14 seconds remaining in the half when he scored on a 4-yard scamper. Jordan Nelson scored Elkmont’s final touchdown on a 1-yard rushing TD in the fourth quarter.

Elkmont finished its season 2-8. The Red Devils played seven teams with a .500 record or better.
