ELKMONT LOSES TO LAUDERDALE COUNTY

The top ranked team in the region, Lauderdale County, came to the hilltop last Friday.   They put together an impressive game illustrating why they are undefeated in the region, winning 63-12.  Elkmont's defense wasn't able to stop the Tiger train but did have some bright spots to build on for this Friday's game at West Morgan.

SECOND HALF STOPS RED DEVILS

The Elkmont Red Devils burned out of the gate and went toe to toe with the Lauderdale County Tigers, October 7. Elkmont  scored on the second play of the game when Patrick Jobman threw a 76-yard touchdown pass to Mark Pena to take an early 7-0 lead.

The Tigers made an interception and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown. Jonathan Rone’s 2-point run gave the Tigers an 8-7 lead.

The lead did not last, however, as Zeb Parker broke a 71-yard touchdown run to give the Red Devils a 13-8 advantage.

The Tigers scratched their way back into the lead with a 28-yard touchdown run a 16-13 score. A red hot Elkmont tied it with a Juan Mendoza-Flores 25-yard field goal as the half ended, 16-16.

 

Lauderdale County Tigers roared past the Red Devils in the second half with 43 unanswered points for a 59 -16 win. 

 

Highlights:

Zeb Pankey carried the ball 15 times for 102 yards and a touchdown in the loss for Elkmont.

Patrick Jobman completed 7 of 22 pass attempts for 156 yards.

TIGERS TOO MUCH FOR RED DEVILS

ELKMONT — Lauderdale County racked up almost 600 rushing yards while its defense forced eight turnovers in a 57-14 road win over Elkmont on Friday.
LCHS led just 20-14 before reeling off 30 third-quarter points to improve to 8-1 on the season and 6-1 in Class 3A Region 8 play.


Elkmont (2-7) struck first, using an offensive that didn’t attempt a rush until the 10:42 mark of the second quarter. Quarterback Bryant Wales found Matthew Barnes for an 11-yard touchdown with 9:54 remaining in the opening quarter.

Lauderdale County answered with 20 straight points. Grisham scored on the second play from scrimmage with a 71-yard scamper to tie the game at 7. After an interception gave LCHS a short field to work with, a 60-yard touchdown run by Grisham gave the Tigers a 14-7 lead with 3:17 remaining in the first quarter.
The Tigers totaled six interceptions, including a pick-six by Brian Puckett early in the second quarter. The failed PAT left the score at 20-7 at the half.
Elkmont again struck first in the third quarter, capping a four-play, 45-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Wales to Rhett Bailey.

SENIOR NIGHT THIS FRIDAY

Elkmont football is having Senior night to recognize the seniors this Friday.  This is their last home game for the 2012 season. They are playing the 5th ranked Lauderdale County Tigers.  Win or lose, senior night is always a very emotional night at Boss Hill Stadium.  Good luck Red Devils.

The skinny: Lauderdale County must win or hope for a Madison Academy loss to claim the region title. Elkmont can only hope to play spoiler. Josh Ferrazas’ late touchdown was the Red Devils’ only score in a 55-6 loss to Deshler last week. Lauderdale County held Westminster Christian to -1 yard of offense the first half of a 48-7 rout last week. Lauderdale County leads all-time series 17-6.

ELKMONT LOSES TO TIGERS - DUST DEVIL IN THE STANDS

Friday night, Lauderdale County broke open a 14-14 game in the fourth quarter and beat Elkmont 34-14.

GAME SUMMARY:
1ST QUARTER:  In the first quarter, Elkmont stopped a long Lauderdale County drive with a fumble recovery by Sloan Hawkins.  Led by the running of quarterback, Hayden Huseth, Elkmont stormed down the field and scored.  Jose Hernandez added the PAT.  At the end of the first quarter, Elkmont led 7-0.


2ND QUARTER:  The Tigers scored on a long touchdown pass to tie the score in the second quarter.  However, Elkmont came back down the field on a drive which ended with a Hayden Huseth ten yard touchdown run.  After the PAT, Elkmont led 14-7.  Lauderdale County broke a big run and were driving deep in Red Devil territory, but Logan Murphy came up with two big quarterback sacks to end the threat.  At the half, Elkmont led 14-7.


3RD QUARTER:  Lauderdale County had a long touchdown run for a touchdown. The quarter ended with the score 14-14.


4TH QUARTER:  The Tigers took control of the game and cruised to a 34-14 win over the Red Devils.


OBSERVATIONS:
THE GOOD - Anyway you look at this game, it was a disappointing and bitter loss.  On the positive side of the game, Elkmont played well in the first half, leading 14-7  at halftime.  Not only did the Red Devils lead, but appeared to be in control of the game and back on track after losing to the Rogers Pirates last week.  Even after a poor third quarter with the offense bogging down, the score was tied at 14-14.   Elkmont has good players, a strong kicking game, a good defense and experienced senior leadership.  They can still turn the season around and have an excellent year.


THE BAD -    However on the negative side, the Red Devils had a fourth quarter meltdown.  The offense could not move the ball and the defense appeared to tire, and gave up big plays.  They were outscored 20-0 in the final quarter and it was not pretty.  Adjustments can be made but Elkmont is running out time.


THE UGLY -  The number one thing the Red Devils must correct in the weeks ahead is the turnover ratio.  At Lauderdale County, Elkmont committed five turnovers to one for the Tigers.  The week before, it was four to one in Rogers' favor.  So, for the last two weeks, Elkmont is -7 in turnovers  No team can win with those statistics.


PREDICTION:  The Dust Devil predicts that Elkmont will start to make adjustments this week and will play better next Friday against  the West Limestone Wildcats.  However, (it pains the Dust Devil to predict this) -  the Wildcats will win 28-14.

Tigers storm back for big win

ROGERSVILLE — After trailing by seven points at halftime and in danger of losing a homecoming game, Lauderdale County stormed back for a 34-14 victory over Elkmont on Friday night, Lauderdale County outscored Elkmont 27-0 in the second half to win going away.


Lauderdale County (3-1, 2-1) tied the game late in the third when a Josh White interception was followed by a 69-yard touchdown run by CJ Jackson.  “I was pleased with a few of our players that had to step up because of some injuries we’ve had,” Lauderdale County coach Bob Grisham said. “CJ Jackson did an outstanding job for us tonight.”  Jackson rushed for 141 yards on just nine carries.


Elkmont (2-2, 1-2) was forced to punt on its next possession. The Tigers then put together a nine-play, 61-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by Jake Newton. Stephen Mair’s extra point gave the Tigers a 21-14 lead with 7:34 remaining.  DJ Simmons recovered a fumble to stall Elkmont’s next drive, and quarterback Samuel Grisham would later score from 26 yards out to give Lauderdale County a 27-14 lead. After a Hunter Haney interception, Grisham added a 1-yard touchdown run late in the game.


Grisham finished with 154 yards on 24 attempts. Vic Gilbert led the Tigers’ defense with 10 tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception.


Elkmont quarterback Hayden Huseth scored twice for the Pirates on runs of 12 and 9 yards. Huseth had 167 yards rushing.  “I was proud of our offense for keeping the ball away from them,” Grisham said. “Their quarterback is a dangerous player.”


The Tigers’ first half touchdown came on a 25-yard halfback pass from Newton to Lake Romine.  Grisham was 0-for-1 passing, and the Tigers didn’t even attempt a pass in the second half. The Tigers did, however, rush for 270 yards in the second half.  “If we don’t have to pass, we’re generally not going to pass,” Grisham said.

Tigers offense bounces back to defeat West Morgan

ROGERSVILLE — Down by 14 points to West Morgan heading into the second quarter, Lauderdale County collected itself and scored 41 unanswered points to claim 41-14 victory.
After being shut out last week by Rogers, the Tigers offense bounced back big, finishing with 500 yards, including 471 yards rushing.
“I’m proud of the way our kids came from behind to win,” Lauderdale County coach Bob Grisham said. “We had a lot of guys step up tonight.”
The Rebels (0-3, 0-2, 3A, Region 8) scored on a pair of touchdowns by Joshua Workman in the first quarter, but it was all Lauderdale County (2-1, 1-1) from there.
LCHS quarterback Samuel Grisham capped a drive with eight minutes to play in the first half with a 16-yard TD run.
Less than four minutes later, the Tigers tied the game at 14 on a 1-yard run by Grisham. With 43 seconds to play in the second quarter, Jake Newton ripped off a 59-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 21-14 heading into the half.
Newton scored again from 1 yard out just one minute into the third quarter to give the Tigers a 28-14 lead. Vic Gilbert scored on runs of 2 and 27 yards in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
Newton rushed 19 times for 166 yards to lead Lauderdale County, while Grisham added 97 yards.
The Tigers host Elkmont next Friday.

Pirates stun Tigers

GREENHILL — It was a statement game between the two top teams in Class 3A, region 8, and Rogers spoke loud and clear with its 23-0 win over Lauderdale County on Friday night.
The game was best summarized by stunned Lauderdale County coach Bob Grisham.
“They gave us a good ole-fashioned whipping,” Grisham said.
That they did, as the Pirates held the Tigers to 145 total yards and forced four turnovers. Lauderdale County (1-1, 0-1) only advanced the ball past midfield on their own twice. The Tigers’ deepest penetration was the Rogers 41-yard line before they recovered a fumble at the Pirates 30 with 1:17 remaining in the game. They promptly threw an interception two plays later, capping a miserable night for the offense.
“I’m shocked,” Grisham said, probably echoing the thoughts of the Tiger supporters who filled the visitors side of Pirates Stadium. “I thought our kids were ready to play tonight and they obviously weren’t. We’ve got a lot of work to do if we want to be the team a lot of people expect us to be.”
But while the Tigers were left to lick their wounds after Friday’s game, the Pirates (1-1, 1-0) were on cloud nine after taking an early lead in the region race.
“We didn’t play well last week (in a 32-20 loss to Brooks), but we came out tonight and played harder and faster on defense,” Rogers coach Dan Beavers said. “They say you improve the most between your first and second week of the season and we did that. The kids really practiced well this week. I’m real proud of them.”
Rogers didn’t need a lot of offense with the way the defense played, but what they got came all in the first half.
The Pirates caught an early break when they
recovered a bad punt snap at the Lauderdale County 25-yard line and it took them just six plays to cash it in for six points when Austin Kerr, who was making his season debut after sitting out last week due to an ankle injury, slammed in the end zone from three yards out. Jacob Duncan made the extra point to put Rogers up 7-0 with 5:48 left in the first quarter.
Rogers added to its lead two possessions later thanks a 34-yard strike from quarterback Tyler Grigsby to Cody Stephens that put the Pirates at the Lauderdale County 27-yard line.
Alex Woodard capped off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown scamper three plays later to put the Pirates up 13-0 midway through the second quarter.
Woodard, who finished the game with 94 yards on 10 carries, scampered 59 yards to set up Rogers’ next touchdown. Woodard’s huge run put Rogers at the 18, and Kerr scored his second touchdown of the night two plays later on a 13-yard run. Grisham found Dustin Blackburn for the two-point conversion.
Rogers’ only score in the second half was a safety after Lauderdale County punter DJ Simmons fell on a bad snap in the end zone on the final play of the third quarter.
That was all the defense needed as they took it to the Tigers in a game that Beavers said could carry the Pirates through the rest of the season.
“If you can get the momentum going, it can definitely carry you into having a good year,” Beavers said. “Tonight was a real good start for us.”
