EAST LAWRENCE SCOUTING REPORT

The Eagles enter the 2011 football season with a new head coach who brings new expectations for his team.Ernie Ferguson inherits a team that will return most of its skill players from the previous season, but must replace several key cogs along the offensive line. To combat the lack of experience along the line, Ferguson, who will assume play-calling duties, will try and level the playing field.

“We’re going to spread it out like when I was at Lawrence County,” Ferguson said. “We’re still going to run the ball a good bit. We don’t want to put everyone in the box and make it harder for us to run, so we’re going to spread people out as much as possible. Hopefully, we should be able to throw the ball well enough to keep people honest.”

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR - ETHAN WHITESIDE

Coach Ethan Whiteside is entering into his second year as a member of the Elkmont High School football staff.  He led the East Limestone Indians as quarterback before going to Southern Mississippi to play tight end.  A Limestone County native, Coach Whiteside chose to make a life in his home county after graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2006.  His lovely wife is the former Misha McCormick of Anderson.  Ethan and Misha are expectant parents and will be welcoming a little Whiteside into their home in January.  


Coach Whiteside will be taking on the responsibilities of the offensive coordinator this year in addition to coaching the offensive line and defensive backs.  His goal for the offensive line is that they will be aggressive and be the leaders of the offensive unit.   His defensive backs will be charged with stopping the long pass and not getting beat deep.  A common goal of the Elkmont coaches is making sure that each player knows what they are doing and not to be confused.  Coach Whiteside also shares this goal for his defensive backs, " I don't want my backs to be fooled by the opposing offense and the fake shifts and roll outs.  They have to read and watch; they must think on their feet and anticipate the play.  I don't want them getting beat in the flat because they weren't paying attention."


"My goal for this year's team is to win the region and get deep in the state playoffs.  I want the players to become students of the game."  As important as winning football games is to Coach Whiteside, he realizes that the most important lessons that football teaches is the ones that stay with a player once they graduate, discipline, sacrifice, hard work and being part of a team.   Coach Whiteside is the youngest of the staff and a valuable addition to the team.  The Elkmont community welcomes him and wishes him and his Elkmont Red Devil offense well this season.

AN INTERVIEW WITH LEVI TERRY - DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Levi Terry is the defensive coordinator and the linebacker coach of the Elkmont Red Devils.  A native of Decatur, he was an outstanding linebacker at  Austin High School.  Terry continued his football career at the University of North Alabama.  He played outside linebacker for the UNA Lions in 2001.  His favorite memory of  playing at North Alabama was being able to experience the atmosphere and excitement of being part of a college football team.

Coach Terry is married to Sunnee.  He is curently teaching Physical Education and Health.  He also is the assistant varsity baseball coach for the Elkmont Red Devils.

He is excited about this season and seeing how his experienced senior linebacker corp matches up to the teams on the Red Devils schedule.   He had these thoughts about the Elkmont Red Devil Football team.

 "As the defensive coordinator, my goal for the defense is for them to be able to adjust and adapt to any offense that lines up against them."

"As the linebacker coach, I want my linebackers to learn more about the game; to be able to read, evaluate and decide what changes they need to make on the field without me having to tell them.  I believe that my linebackers will be able to do that this year.  They will be coaches on the field, and help the entire defensive team adjust quickly to what they see on the field."

" My goal for the team is more than about wins and losses.  I want them to learn life lessons;  how to manage success and deal with disappointment; to use those experiences to motivate themselves to be better."

Coach Terry became reflective when asked about this senior class.  He has worked with them for four years, seen them grow from boys into young men.  He has been a stable influence for them as they have adjusted to three different head coaches.  His thoughts on what he wants this class to take with them when they graduate from Elkmont High School is "to do whatever is necessary to succeed and don't give up when the going gets tough."

MEET ELKMONT'S HEAD FOOTBALL COACH - SEAN HOLT

After nine years as a coach in the Elkmont Football Program,  Coach Sean Holt will be taking the reins of the 2011 Red Devils Varsity football team.  He has been part of Elkmont Football for 8 years.  His wife Tamara is the middle school cheerleading sponsor.  Their children are Cassidy and Brooklyn, two active young ladies that keep their parents busy.

Coach Holt is an Ardmore High graduate.  He played baseball and then continued his baseball career at Martin Methodist .  His high school years also included a football uniform.  Holt played cornerback on the defensive side of the ball and tight end/ receiver positions on offensive.  "Football has changed so much since I played.  We had one defense (5-3) with a blitz and didn't adjust to the other team's offenses.  We lined up with that defense and that was our game plan.  Today's game is a thinking man's game.  It is so much more technical.  A team will have various defenses and offenses; the game plan changing for each opponent.  There are coverages, checks, and adjustments that the players make on each play.  Studying the other team, developing and implementing an effective game plan happens way before kickoff."

Coach Holt has worked with three head coaches during his eight years on the coaching staff.  His first two years were as a middle school coach.  He then moved up to the varsity program and worked with Coach McGhee.  As an assistant coach, he worked with the defensive line and the quarterbacks/running backs.  Coach McGhee emphasis was defense.   Holt took advantage of that and learned more about the the technical side of the defensive line. 

Coach McGhee left and went back to Georgia and Coach Don Jacobs moved to town.  Coach Holt worked as the defensive coordinator for three years with Jacobs.  "Working with Coach Jacobs was like attending the University of Football.  It was an advanced study of football.  I learned coverages, how to adapt, how to match up defenses to offenses and how to make adjustments as the game was being played.  Working with Coach Jacobs was a steep learning curve.  I became a better defensive coordinator and learned so much about the game of football."

After three years, Coach Jacobs took another football job and left the Red Devils and Coach David Wilson came in.  Holt again served as the defensive coordinator.  "I liked Coach Wilson.  His time here at Elkmont confirmed my belief in the importance of calm and perseverance when dealing with adversity.  Working with three talented head coaches has been a blessing,  I will use what I learned from them to develop a competitive and close knit program that will represent Elkmont High School well."

"This year my goal for this season is to make the playoffs.  Elkmont has a strong group of experienced seniors who know how to work hard and hit hard.  They are the core of this football team and will provide consistent leadership.  My goal for this senior class is help them have positive football experiences.  I want each player on this team to prepare, play hard and know what to do on every play.  I firmly believe that a "CONFUSED PLAYER IS A BAD PLAYER".  My goal is no confused players.  I want my team to learn how to stay calm, evaluate and analyze situations; not to become so tied up in the moment that they forget what they are doing, why they are there.  "Adrenaline quickly runs out but enthusiasm will carry a player throughout a game."

"I'm looking forward to a successful season and being able to work with this group of young men.  I have a great coaching staff.  I would like to invite everyone to come to the games.  The jamboree is at East Lawrence this Thursday, August 18 @ 6:30.   We will evaluate and start preparing as soon we get off the bus after the East Lawrence game for our season opener against Ardmore.  It is big rivalry and has terrific atmosphere.  This game is a great kickoff to the season and I hope everyone will attend and support the Red Devils this season."

STADIUM PAINT DAY

Parents,

This Saturday, August 13, we are holding a paint day for the stadium.  We desperately need help from parents to paint.  If you have a spray painter, please contact Coach Holt immediately.  Even if you do not have equipment, please come help paint.  We will supply the rollers, roller covers, paint and other needed supplies.  We will start at 8 am.

We also are going to offer football shirts and hats with our new logo to sell to the parents first.  If you are interested in buying a shirt or hat please send a note indicating how many and what sizes you will need.  We are hoping you will be able to wear them to the Ardmore game.

DOOLEY LEAVING ELKMONT RED DEVILS

Keith Dooley has served as the Encore athletic trainer at Elkmont High School for 2 years.  A valued member of football team, he is the "go to" guy whenever an injury occurs.  Taking the time to know the players has allowed him to be able to tell when an injury has occurred.  By observing how a player holds an arm slightly different, favoring a leg or just not playing like normal, Dooley often knows when an injury has occurred before anyone else knows.  The players trust him and Keith has become a respected friend of many.

He will be leaving the Elkmont High School community next week and Monday will be his last day with the team.  He will join the Faith Academy,  Mobile Alabama, athletic program as their Encore trainer.  Leaving Elkmont was not something Dooley had planned but this transfer was the best choice for him and his new bride, Jackie Swan.  Job opportunities for Jackie in the tri-county area were slim while she has a job in the Mobile area.  It was easier for Keith to transfer to an Encore school located close to Mobile rather than Jackie to move to an uncertain job market.  An added perk is that he is much closer to sand and surf.

Dooley had this to say about his experiences at Elkmont High School.

        "I want to express my thanks to Elkmont High School, the football staff and especially the players for making me feel part of the team, not just a trainer sent by Encore.  I am close to the seniors.  I have worked with them a number of years and have come to call them friends.  I was apprehensive when I first came to Elkmont.  I had always worked at the college level and didn't know how I would be able to relate to a high school team.  My first day, Cole Glass walked up to me and talked to me like he had known me for years.  I felt right at ease with my new team and these seniors hold a special place in my heart.  They have always welcomed me and made me part of their lives.  I want them to know that once you are a Dooley kid, always a Dooley kid.  I will always do anything I can to help them as they go through life.  I leave knowing that I have friends here and I will continue to follow the team.  The Elkmont football blog will allow me to watch their games and know how their season is going.  I wish them the best of luck this season and in their future endeavors."

Season tickets will be available for $30 each and will cover admission for all home football games for middle school, junior varsity, and varsity games! What a deal! Call or see Ms. Gina Miller in the EHS front office to purchase your season tickets!

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE QUARTERBACK CLUB MEETING

The Quarterback Club/football team made a lot of progress on the stadium but there is still things to do before the first game vs Ardmore.  This Saturday, August 13 @ 8 am will be "Paint the Stadium" Day.


The concession stand also still needs work as well on Saturday.  Equipment needs to be cleaned and checked.  Supplies also need to stocked.  The football program needs more parents to get involved.  Don't expect someone else to do it because if everyone thinks that then nobody does it.  Please come this Saturday to help out.  Wear your painting clothes.


The concession stand is getting a new deep fryer and hot dog roller cooker.  The day of the water boiled hot dog is gone.  An outdoor grill for hamburgers is also on the buy list.

2011 ELKMONT FOOTBALL SEASON IS HERE

The first day of practice will be Monday @ 2:30.  This is always the official kickoff of the football season.  However, there is a debate if it ever ends in Alabama.  Since it is August, it will be very hot, that goes without saying.  A helpful hint to survive the first few weeks of August football practice is to freeze a gallon jug of water.  The jug (with your name on it) and a cloth for your neck go to practice.  Put it under the shade tree next to the practice field.  By the time the first break rolls around, there will be enough cold water to drink and pour on the neck cloth (it will cool you down quick).  The jug will still be halfway frozen so the next break still has ice water.  If you forget, don't worry - there is always lots of water to drink; just not as nice as your own.

Elkmont Football Reserved Seats Now On Sale

The Elkmont Quarterback Club is offering reserved seating for the 2011 football season.  Each seat is $30 which includes home varsity games excluding playoff games.


A mandatory booster club membership of $15 will be added to each 
family's group of tickets.  All reserved seats must be paid for by August 27.
Any seats not renewed by this date will be released to the booster club members on the wait list.

PICTURE DAY - JULY 27@ 8AM

Picture day is July 27 at 8:00 am for Varsity football, cheerleading, band.  We will be selling football program ads at that time.  You can turn in your ad and picture (if you want to bring your own) or if you want to bring a younger sibling or someone to have their picture taken with a player for an ad, you may do so.  All ads need to be turned in that day.

This year we are setting up on Tuesday night before, July 26^th, at 6:00 to sell ads.  We hope that some Middle school players, businesses, young supporters, or any one that would like to support Elkmont Football will come buy an ad and get their picture took if they would like a photo on the ad.  This will NOT be professional pictures that can be purchased.  This is just an opportunity to generate sales.  The quarterback club depends on the sale of the program ads to generate money.  So the more ads we sale the more money we have for our children!

FUTURE RED DEVILS - FREE FOOTBALL CAMP, JULY 15

Sarrell Dental Center is holding a free football camp Friday for children ages 8-13.

The camp will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Athens High School stadium. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.

Those attending will be given the opportunity to learn the fundamentals and skills of football instructed by Jacksonville State University head coach Jack Crowe and several of his current players. In addition, the campers will be exposed to techniques on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, as well as learn the importance of teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Sarrell Dental is a nonprofit organization that treats the dental and optical needs of Alabama children ages 1-20 with Medicaid and All-Kids insurance. The company was founded in 2004 in Anniston, and has since grown to include 11 other offices, including one in Athens.

NEW GYM CLOSED UNTIL JULY 11

New gym is closed until Monday, July 11 due to repainting/refinishing the floors.  It is getting an updated paint job and will look great for the upcoming school year.

NEW HEAD COACH

Due to budget cuts and the loss of a PE position,  Coach David Wilson's contract was not renewed.  Sean Holt was promoted to the head coach position on Thursday during the Limestone County School Board meeting.  He has been an Elkmont assistant coach for the past 10 years, including the past four as defensive coordinator.

Coach Holt had these words to say about being the new football coach, “I’m very excited about the opportunity. I know all of the kids really well, so I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be fun.”

Coach Holt has been able to work under three excellent head coaches, Chad McGee, Don Jacobs and David Wilson.  Each coach had different areas of strength and Coach Holt will be able to take what he has learned from them and field a team that will have a successful season with a excellent chance to make the playoffs.

BRONSON ELLIS

The Elkmont football program has suffered more than its share of adversity over the last 8 months.  However,  two of the greatest trials has been the battle with cancer for two of our football players - Bronson Ellis and Rhett Bailey.

Bronson is doing extremely well in his fight with testicular cancer.  He is recovering quickly from recent surgery and the doctors are hopeful that the cancer is gone.  He is doing so well that he may be able to rejoin the football team for his senior season.  Best wishes for a quick and full recovery.

Rhett Bailey is still recovering at Saint Jude's and may be home by the end of the month.

Background Story

On the weekend before Easter Sunday, 2011, I was really sick and thought I had the stomach virus.  This was the second round of the stomach virus (or so we thought), so my dad got up early and took me to the Athens Limestone Hospital Emergency Room on Sunday morning.  There they hooked me up to IV's and ran tests on my stomach.  Little did we know that those tests were about to change my whole life.  That afternoon the ER doctor came in and told us that he was extremely concerned.  I had an intususception of the bowels (a blockage), and he had also saw some really large lymph nodes on a CAT scan that the hospital did.  He was concerned that this was cancer.....Scary words, but words that got everyone's attention really fast. 

I spent the night at Athens Hospital where I had a tube inserted into my nose and into my stomach.  This was to keep my stomach from sending stuff to my bowels.  It was also to keep me from throwing up.  Not a fun thing to do, but it was necessary.  My parents decided the next morning to ask for me to be sent to Huntsville Women's and Children's Hospital where they were a part of the St. Jude network.  We were not really sure we would need this option, but they wanted me to be a place that was used to seeing unusual things in children. 

When I arrived in Huntsville, I was pretty much immediately surrounded by doctors, nurses, surgeons, etc...They decided that I needed a biopsy and maybe exploratory surgery.  On Tuesday morning with at least 30 to 40 people waiting with me, I had surgery and had a large lymph node removed from my abdomen.  Dr. Gilbert at this time did not remove the intususception due to not knowing if we were dealing with cancer or just a problem with the bowel.  The doctors and nurses at Women's and Children's, just as the doctors and nurses from Athens Limestone Hospital, were wonderful.  After my surgery I felt pretty good and was even able to eat a little that night.  Unfortunately things took a turn for the worse with my condition and the weather for the next day.

The next two days of my life are two that needless to say I would never want to repeat.  Sometime after midnight I started throwing up and would continue to throw up until Thursday afternoon.  Early on Wednesday morning the worst tornado outbreak since 1932 occurred, and the hospital was hit by lightening and a power outage.  Back up generators came on, but the air conditioning just was not what I needed to feel better while heaving.  Additionally the machines they needed to complete my diagnosis were hit by the lightening and so the doctors could not complete the needed tests.  Again, Wednesday night was a horrible night, so the next morning the staff and doctors decided to move me to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis.  Because of the horrible conditions in Northern Alabama, an ambulance had to be sent from Memphis to get me in Huntsville.  Right before I left, I had an allergic reaction to the nausea medicine I was taking, and I was even more sick than I had been previously.  All these things said, it was a blessing that I was loaded into the ambulance and headed for Memphis.  It was here that I found the answers we needed for what was going on with me.

Finally, after four hours we arrived in Memphis at 8:00 p.m. that night.  The doctors and nurses started working on me immediately, and I finally fell asleep about 1:00 a.m. in the morning.  Tests were scheduled for about 7:00 a.m. the next morning so we were up early for those.  A wonderful team of surgeons came and met with us, and later that day they found out my bowels were in some serious trouble.  The bowels were not getting enough blood, so they decided to do surgery and remove the intususception.  They removed 15 centimeters of my small and large intestines plus my appendix.  They also removed a polyp to biopsy.  Then more waiting began.

With cancer I have found out that a lot of stuff is hurry up and wait.  Well, we did and on the next Monday the doctors told me that I had (and still have) Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma.  It is all confined to my abdomen area, but I have to have chemotherapy for the next four to six months to remove it all.  This is a challenge for me and for my family, but I know with God's help and the support of all my friends, family, and well just everyone, I am going to do great.  Finally, I have wonderful doctors and nurses here at St. Jude, and I am so thankful to be here.  Thanks for reading my story - there is more to come!

Spring Football Starts Monday

Practice starts Monday @ 3:30.  The big change in the schedule is that the annual spring Steak and Weenie Game has been moved to the fall.  The football team will have an open scrimmage on May 13.
