NEWS COURIER PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ELKMONT— Hayden Huseth and his Elkmont teammates wanted to make a statement Friday in their opening game of the season against Ardmore.

They did.

The Red Devils took control of the game early, jumping out to a 21-0 lead at the half, and never looked back in the 41-7 win.

Huseth led the way, racking up 285 of Elkmont’s 472 total yards. He rushed for 139 and one touchdown— a 42-yard run. He also threw for another 146 yards and two touchdowns.

For his performance, Huseth has been selected as this week’s News Courier Player of the Week.

Huseth and the Red Devils travel to West Morgan Friday for the first Class 3A, Region 8 game of the year.

ARDMORE BEATS JV RED DEVILS ON LAST SECOND TOUCHDOWN

JV Football – Elkmont vs Ardmore       

Aug. 29, 2011

Elkmont won the coin toss and deferred to the 2^nd half. Both teams struggled early on to move the ball, the first couple of possessions for both teams resulted in three in and out or getting stopped on fourth down. Ardmore had the ball and drove down the field to Elkmont’s three yard line.  The next play, Ardmore’s Miller was picked off in the end zone by Jordan Adams who returned it out to Elkmont’s own 5. 
At the end of the first quarter,  the score was tied at 0 – 0.

The second quarter started with Elkmont on its own 5 yard line. The offense looked good, moving the ball down field, picked up a couple of first downs and with an Ardmore personal foul penalty, Elkmont seemed to be in business. With the ball on Ardmore’s 40 yard line, Jared Bailey hit Mike Tucker for a 10 yard pass which moved the ball to the 30. The next play, Elkmont was charged with a block in the back and this drive went downhill from here. The next play had a bad snap go over Bailey’s head with the following play being intercepted. Ardmore got the ball back and had a good drive going when Elkmont stopped them on fourth down. With 1:00 remaining till half time, Bailey connected with Emmanuel Sanchez on a 52 yard touchdown strike and Sanchez’s PAT was good. 

Halftime:  Elkmont 7, Ardmore 0.

To start the 3^rd quarter, Elkmont’s Jordan Adams made a good kickoff return to give the Red Devils good field possession. The offense had a drive going in Ardmore territory when Jared Bailey was intercepted. Ardmore took the ball and drove it down the field both passing and running. Ardmore has the ball deep in Elkmont's territory with 4^th & 1 to go and the ball resting on the five. Ardmore got the first down and ended up scoring the next play. Ardmore elected to go for two but Elkmont’s defense held strong, denying the two point conversion.  At the end of the third quarter, the Red Devils were still in the lead,  7-6.

The fourth quarter started with Elkmont’s Jordan Adams returning the kickoff 65 yards for a TD and when we thought things were looking good, we see a flag on the field for a block in the back.  The touchdown was called back and the score did not stand. The next play, Elkmont was again penalized for holding. A couple of plays later, Mike Tucker picked up a crucial first down on 3^rd and 15 with a 20 yard run. The drive stalled and Elkmont had to punt. With 1:29 left in the game, Ardmore’s QB Miller went to work, completing several passes and driving the ball deep into Elkmont territory. Cody Clark came up big with a QB sack with 25 seconds to play. A couple of plays later, Miller was picked off by Elkmont’s Sanchez in the end zone.

With 11 seconds left to play, Elkmont had the ball on the 1 yard line. Elkmont fumbled and Ardmore recovered the ball at the one foot line with 1 second left on the clock. Ardmore then goes in to score with 1 second left to play and won 12-7.

The JV boys did a great job, just came up a little short. With  continued hard work and dedication, they have the potential to be really good.

Elkmont 41, Ardmore 7

ELKMONT, Alabama – Hayden Huseth was a one-man show as he completed 9-of-12 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns, rushing for 139 yards on 14 carries with one touchdown to lead Elkmont (1-0).

Skyler Gant got the scoring started for the Red Devils with a 92-yard punt return for a touchdown followed by 6-yard run on the next possesion.

Galvin Calder rushed 29 times for 160 yards and scored the lone touchdown for Ardmore (0-1).

ELKMONT SMASHES ARDMORE - DUSTDEVIL IN THE STANDS

GAME SUMMARY:
On Friday night at Boss Hill Stadium, Sean's Holt's Elkmont football team showed the potential to be an outstanding team this year by  beating Ardmore 41-7.


To start the game, Ardmore used a two tight end, 3 back, no receiver set to try to power the ball at the middle of the Elkmont defense.  Ardmore had some early success and made a couple of first downs with this strategy.  However, Levi Terry's defense adjusted and shut down the Ardmore offense for most of the night.  


In the first quarter, Skyler Gant had a 95 yard punt return TD worthy of a ESPN top ten play.  He broke 2 tackles, spun out of trouble and outran the Ardmore defenders to the end zone.  Jose Hernandez added the PAT and Elkmont led 7-0.  Also in the first quarter, Sloan Hawkins recovered an Ardmore fumble and Hernandez missed a 37 field goal.  The first quarter ended with Elkmont 7, Ardmore 0.


In the second quarter, the Elkmont defense completely shut down the Tiger offense.  Elkmont added 2 scores - a 6 yard Skyler Gant touchdown run and a 6 yard TD by Chase Renew.  At halftime, Elkmont led 21-0.


Elkmont continued to pile up the points in the third quarter.  Hayden Huseth threw a pair of touchdown passes;  27 yards to Cole Glass and 74 yards to Skyler Gant.  Quarterback Huseth also had a 42 yard TD run.  The third quarter ended with Elkmont ahead 41-0.


In the fourth quarter, Elkmont was able to play a lot of younger players giving them needed varsity experience.   Ardmore added a late touchdown to make the final score 41-7.


OBSERVATIONS: 
Elkmont played outstanding football Friday night.  The coaches had the team well prepared.  The defense was aggressive and tackled well.  The offensive line played well, opening up holes for the running game and giving the quarterback plenty of time to throw.  Hayden Huseth showed great skill as a dual threat quarterback.  Skyler Gant had a great game and reminded fans of first team all-state David Solomon from a few years ago.  The kicking game was outstanding, both kicker Jose Hernandez and punter Logan Murphy are experienced and have strong legs.  Murphy had a 68 yard punt in the game.


PREDICTION:
Elkmont will have a good week of practice and will beat the West Morgan Rebels 35-24 next week.

HARD WORK AND BEING PREPARED IS ELKMONT'S GOAL

 ELKMONT— Sean Holt may be the new football coach at Elkmont, but fans shouldn't expect anything different out of the Red Devils this season.

Holt, who has been an Elkmont assistant coach for the past 10 years, including the past four as the Red Devils defensive coordinator, is sticking to the same foundation that's been a part of the program since he arrived.

"Hard work and being prepared," Holt said. "You can't predict what will happen during a game, but if you're prepared and you've worked hard, you have a lot better chance than not. Style wise, we’ll look the same, but we’ve adjusted our plays to our talent and what we can do,” Holt said.

Offensively, the Red Devils return five starters from a year ago. Senior Hayden Huseth will be at the quarterback position, while Cole Glass and Austin McNatt are back at receiver. Skylar Gant returns at running back. Holt also expects Hugo Hernandez, Chase Renew and Justin Ward to contribute at the running back position. Bryant Wells and Ben Ferguson are also expected to help out at receiver. Anchoring the line will be Dan Logan, Sloan Hawkins, Jake Marshall, Cody Martin and Logan Murphy.

“Up front I hope we’re going to be strong because we have some senior lineman who have gotten strong in the weight room. We don’t have the biggest team, but they’re all in shape and strong.”

Defensively, seven are returning, including Logan and Martin who have been starting for three years.

Overall, Holt is optimistic about his first year at the helm.

“We have a lot of players, but a lot of young players,” Holt said. “Depth is going to be an issue, so staying healthy is going to be a big thing. If we can catch the right breaks I think we have a chance to have a decent season.”

ARDMORE TIGERS LOOKING TO BUILD ON LAST SEASON

ARDMORE— Shannon Brown is optimistic about what's on the verge of happening at Ardmore.

Since taking over the Tiger football team three seasons ago, he's been working to restore the program back to what it once was in the late 1950s and early '60s when they had four unbeaten seasons. Last year  certainly proved to be a step in the right direction.

After starting the year 0-4, Ardmore won four straight, falling just short of earning a postseason appearance. Now, Brown and his players are using that as a stepping stone as they prepare for the 2011 season.

"The most important thing is we need to build on the positive things we were able to accomplish last year," Brown said. "Definitely drilling off four games in a row was huge for us after starting 0-4. That says a lot about the integrity of the boys and their work ethic, and I've seen that carry on into the offseason, as well as this summer."

Gone are the productive duo of J. Tribble and Matt Teeples who led the Tigers' offense a year ago. Battling to replace Tribble at quarterback are Tyler Scoggins and Garett Miller. Gavin Calder is expected to carry a lot of the Tigers load offensively. Hunter Pack and Matt Edwards return on the offensive line.

Daniel McNeese and Jacob Petritsch are the Tigers two returning players on defense.

"We don't have a whole lot of returning starters, but we have a lot of guys coming back who had significant playing time," Brown said. "So we're looking forward to building on that and trying to continue the process of building the program back. It's going to take time, and it's going to take patience, but I do like the way the work ethic and the commitment of the community are trying to chance that perception of Ardmore football."

While Brown's process may still  be an upward battle, he feels things are moving the right way.

"We're still climbing the hill, but we're not sliding down it," he said. "There's still going to be bumps in the road. Our numbers are low, but they're low because we have guys that want to  be in the program, those that have made that sacrifice and commitment. That's what it’s all about. That's what we need for us to continue to go forward and grow and get this program to where it can be."

Ardmore opens the season Friday at Elkmont.

Tailing starts @ 4:30 pm and Line up for the Spirit Walk to cheer the Red Devils is about 5:10.

What to expect: 


The Tigers have struggled to win in the last quarter of a century with three winning seasons and one break-even mark in that span. Ardmore has stopped and started in recent years, going at least .500 for the first time in 11 seasons in 2003 followed by a 7-4 record. Ardmore then went 0-10 then bounced back to log an 8-3 mark in ’06. The Tigers have gone 1-9, 4-6, 1-9 and 4-6 since. Brown, entering his third season after stops at Bob Jones, Greensboro and Southern Academy, said his players have the right work ethic. But Brown is still charged with changing the culture into a winning one.  "We've got good kids here, and this is a good town.  We can win here, and we will win here but we've got to be patient  We've got to build the program for the ground up."

The Tigers are looking for their first winning season and playoff game since 2006. Ardmore's program made process with four wins last year. Few returning starters but Brown expects more progress.  The Tigers will have to find a way to make up the offensive production of quarterback J. Tribble and receiver Matt Teeples, who led the offense to an average of 22.2 points a game.  Senior Tyler Scoggins and freshman Garett Miller are the frontrunners to replace Tribble at quarterback.  Running back Gavin Calder will have three returning starters blocking for him.  Calder said, "Hunter Pack, he's our left guard; Jacob Petritsch and Cody Bigomy are my two fullbacks.  They open up the holes for me."
