ELKMONT MIDGETS COUNTY RUNNERUP

The last game of the season for the Elkmont Midgets was a win! The midgets hit the field ready for their last game against the West Limestone Wildcats. They stood strong until the end and finished off their season with a 20 to 14 victory.  They ended the season with 6 wins and 2 loses. They also finished #2 in the county in the midget division.  

These boys played hard every week and practiced just as hard to show the county just how amazing they truly are! Congratulations boys! You all did an awesome job! Congrats to the coaches as well, these boys played their best because of the way you taught them and your dedication to them week after week! Thank you for a Great Season! Looking forward to next year! Go Devils!

ELKMONT FALLS TO HALEYVILLE

Unfortunately a great season has ended as the Red Devils couldn't overcome 5 turnovers and 10 flags to win.  Elkmont moved the ball well but when they reached the striking distance to score, disaster seemed to always happen.  We are very proud of the 8-3 season and wish our departing seniors much success in the future.  As for the rest of the team, spring practice starts in six months.

Haleyville’s powerful running game overpowered Elkmont as the Lions advanced to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. Quarterback Conner Kiser ran for 212 yards on 17 carries and scored four touchdowns, while Brady Sherrill added 122 yards on 18 carries The Lions finished with 400 yards rushing
Haleyville (9-2) will play at Oneonta in the second round.

A 26-yard field goal by Antonio Reyes was the only score in the first quarter as the Lions opened a 3-0 lead.  Haleyville’s defense accounted for the next score as Will Evans returned an interception 82 yards to make it 10-0. Kiser pushed the Lions’ lead to 17-0 when he found Jonas Dodd for a 9-yard scoring play with 8:41 to go in the second quarter.

Elkmont (8-3) trimmed the margin to 17-7 on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Nelson to Eli Hobbs. Kiser quickly answered for the Lions, breaking free for a 44-yard touchdown run to put the Lions ahead 24-7 at halftime.

Kiser added a 21-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter and a 1-yard sneak in the final seconds of the quarter to extend Haleyville’s lead to 38-7.

The Red Devils scored early in the fourth quarter on a 25-yard pass from Jared Bailey to Hobbs to make it 38-14. Kiser again answered for the Lions, racing 49 yards for his fourth touchdown and a 45-14 lead. Elkmont added a score with 5:11 remaining on a 1-yard run by Michael Tucker.  Bailey finished with 160 yards rushing on 22 carries, while Tucker added 94 yards on eight carries.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS - ELKMONT VS HALEYVILLE

It's finally here, first round of playoffs.  All of Elkmont is excited about tonight's game. There is lots of info about the Haleyville vs Elkmont matchup.  Hopefully, you will find what you are looking for here.

for those of you who are wondering what this is:  The students line the halls and wish the players well on the way to the game bus

* parents and non students can be part of the Spirit Walk by lining up outside the elementary door in the gym parking lot (side facing football field)

Hill Spirit has always been told that cool weather is football weather but brrr!! Expect a few clouds to hang around tonight with temperatures dropping quickly after sunset. Dress warm; don't forget gloves and bring an extra blanket. Might want to consider bringing a sleeping bag to step into when you find your game seat.

The skinny: There might not be much defense in this game, as Haleyville is averaging 40.3 points per game and Elkmont is totaling 32.3 points. …The Lions dropped Lawrence County 40-21 last week, while Elkmont beat Clements 42-14. . ... Haleyville quarterback Conner Kiser boasted four touchdowns last week and will look to carry that momentum into the playoffs. ... Elkmont running back Jared Bailey, who rushed for 115 yards and one touchdown on eight carries, will be a focal point for the Haleyville defense. 

Decatur Daily:
In what should be a close first-round playoff game, Haleyville looks to have a small advantage being at home. Playing on the road has not worked against Elkmont. The Red Devils are 5-0 on the road.

BACK IN THE PLAYOFFS

Nothing can perk up a community like a winning football season. Elkmont is a perfect example. The Red Devils (8-2) are back in the playoffs. Life is good in Elkmont.  
 

“We’ve had a lot of fun this season. The community support has gotten bigger and bigger each week. “It’s great when people you don’t even know come up and tell you, Hey, your team is doing a good job.”  said Coach Holt.

Holt grew up in Elkmont. He knows how important Friday night at Boss Hill Stadium is to the community. After two losing seasons, this was a season of high expectations. There are 16 seniors on the team. That’s a lot of seniors even for schools in larger classifications.  “It’s been a struggle for the last couple of years,” Holt said. “We just needed to find a way to get over the hump.”

That opportunity came in the season opener, a 49-27 win over rival Ardmore. The Red Devils followed that with a 41-35 win over 4A power Brooks.

“It’s a big deal for a small school to get the season started in the right way,” Holt said. “When your kids are excited about football, it builds momentum. That can take you a long way.”

The only blemishes on the record were 34-0 to No. 4-ranked Deshler and 33-7 to No. 9 Wilson. “Even though those losses were lopsided, we learned some things that have made us a better football team,” Holt said.

  

Elkmont has found success on offense out of its Wing-T attack with Jordan Nelson at quarterback.  Four running backs split the carries. They are Mike Tucker, Zeb Pankey, Jared Bailey and Eli Hobbs. Having that many weapons has made it difficult to shut down the Elkmont offense. “Having 16 seniors has given us a lot of great play in the line on both offense and defense,” Holt said. “We’re averaging 250 yards rushing a game.”

The Elkmont defense has thrived on turnovers. The Red Devils have intercepted 14 passes. Bailey has six.

“We’ve faced several Wing-T offenses, and I’m sure Elkmont has faced several spread offenses,” Haleyville coach Bo Culver said. “Football teams don’t wake up with 8-2 records. Both teams have earned their way to the playoffs.”

In what should be a close first-round playoff game, Haleyville looks to have a small advantage being at home. Playing on the road has not worked against Elkmont. The Red Devils are 5-0 on the road.

“That’s just another example of an advantage to having so many seniors,” Holt said. “When we are on the road, we come ready to play.”

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE HAYLEVILLE LIONS?

Elkmont will be at Haleyville in the first round of the state playoffs tonight.  Kickoff is at 7 pm.  We haven't played Haleyville before so if you ask most people don't know about the Lions.  Here is the Times Daily Prep Preview of Haleyville.

 

 

 

Offense

The Lions are looking for balance in their offense this season.  "We would like to be a run-first team out of spread formations," said first-year head coach Bo Culver, who has also served as head coach at Phil Campbell and an assistant at Florence. "We have some returners at skill positions, but we are only going to be as good as our line allows us to be."

The line will feature only one returning starter in center Will Beckman. Culver said he will count on the senior for leadership in the trenches.

"Will has been doing a great job," he said. "We will need him to step up and really push the others around him."

At quarterback, Conner Kiser returns. Fellow seniors Jonas Dodd and Dillon Posey will join rising sophomore Brady Sherrill to round out the receiving corps.

Defense

The Lions plan on using the three-stack system, which includes a middle (Mike) linebacker and two outside backs positioned over the defensive ends.

"It's the same type of defense that Hartselle runs," Culver said. "We will be as multiple as we need to be. Defensive coordinator Todd McNutt has done an outstanding job."

Culver added that injuries and position changes have been a few obstacles that the defense has overcome during the offseason.

"We return Jesse Overton at nose guard," Culver said. "He has fought back from injury and has really worked hard at getting back into shape." Adam Broyles has also moved from defensive end from linebacker. Dakota Morris is also a senior inside linebacker who can provide leadership for us on and off the field. Each of these guys will have to play well for us to be successful this year."

Extra Points

With most schools need an adjustment period whenever a new coach takes over a program, Culver said that has not been the case at Haleyville. "I think the transition has been seamless," he said. "The kids really didn't have to learn a whole new system. We feel good about where we are. This is hands down the best coaching staff I have ever been a part of and I have been on some good ones."

The AHSAA reclassification that included seven divisions offered only minor changes to Haleyville's schedule. The Lions remained in Class 4A, but moved from Region 8 to Region 5 in the process. Rival Hamilton has moved from Class 3A and joins the Lions in Region 5.

ELKMONT MIDGETS LOSE TO INDIANS

It was a nail biter in Athens as the Elkmont Midgets took the field against the East Limestone Midgets. It was a tough game for both sides. Offense and defense worked together until the end. 

The final score: Elkmont 7, East Limestone 12

 
Each kid played their heart out! Great Game Boys! Next up the midgets will play West at 12 p.m. November 8th.
