PREDICTION:
Decatur Daily - Elkmont at New Hope
Where: Jack Mitchell Stadium
Records: Elkmont (0-4), New Hope (3-1)
Last season: Elkmont won 35-14
The skinny: Elkmont has losses to Ardmore, Wilson, Brooks and West Limestone. The Red Devils have been outscored 56-159. … After opening the season with a loss to 5A power Fort Payne (42-7), New Hope has rattled off wins over Geraldine, Plainview and Pisgah. Since the loss, the Indians have outscored opponents 104-57.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE NEW HOPE INDIANS?

OVERALL:
There’s optimism at New Hope entering the fall despite the loss of star running back and Auburn signee Johnathan “Rudy” Ford.  The Indians finished 6-4 last year and missed the playoffs despite having Ford, a first-team All-State performer who ran for 1,669 yards and 27 scores. Coach Randall Taylor’s team is aiming for its first playoff appearance since 2006.

RECORD:
Overall 3 - 1
*Non-Conference Loss to Ft. Payne, 42-7

Region 3 - 0
   * Win over Geraldine, 50-21
   * Win over Plainview, 21-16
   * Win over Pisgah, 33-20
Bret Clark
Grabbed six receptions for 135 yards and two scores and threw a touchdown in a 33-20 victory over Pisgah.

OFFENSE:

Offensive line is a force to be reckoned with and makes it difficult to rattle the skill players.  Leading the front is senior Dustin Maples, a Class 3A All-State honorable mention selection last season. “He’s just power," Coach Roden said. "He’s one of our best offensive linemen there is. He’s just a beast.”  Offensive guard/defensive tackle Jay Childers, a three-year starter, is healthy entering his senior year. He was hampered by knee injuries the past two seasons.

Replacing graduated quarterback Blake Smith is sophomore Adam Browner (6-3, 205), a drop-back passer who will also play free safety. Bret Clark, a freshman, is also a quarterback who may play multiple positions on the field to gain experience.

The Indians love their ground game.  They have three running backs that are very capable of moving the ball down the field.  Jacob Warren (5-9, 185), a junior, will share carries in the backfield with junior Jake Wilbourn and sophomore Blake Jackson Warren and Wilbourn (5-10, 186) combined for more than 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns last year. The Indians rushed for more than 3,000 yards as a team.

CLEMENTS BEAT ELKMONT MIDDLE SCHOOL

On September 21, Elkmont's Middle School team added freshman to its roster to take on the Clements Colts.  The Colts use a Jr. High team format which already consisted of seventh, eighth, and ninth graders so the Red Devils expanded it's roster as well. The hybrid squad looked good, considering tonight's game was the first time they had played together.

Elkmont's lone score came on a 47 yard run by Luke Claunch, with Drake Black adding the two point conversion. The Middle School Red Devils fell by a final score of 30-8. The Red Devils' next game is at Madison Academy on September 24, a game that was recently added to the schedule.

WEST ROLLS IN SECOND HALF FOR WIN

Down Home Portraits
The Red Devils started the football game red-hot in staking a 23-14 halftime lead, but the visiting West Limestone Wildcats shut them out in the second half to win 43-23.

Alex Maples opened the first-quarter scoring for West with a 5-yard run, making it 7-0. But Elkmont responded just two plays later, when senior quarterback Jordan Nelson connected with receiver Noah Sharp on a perfect 44-yard touchdown pass.  West fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Elkmont converted on the next play when Nelson ran a quarterback keeper off-tackle to give the Red Devils a 14-7 lead. Everything seems to be going Elkmont’s way when Zeb Pankey recovered on onside kick for the host team. Daniel Valencia booted a field goal to extend the lead to 17-7.

In the next series, the Wildcats attempted to convert a fourth down deep in their own territory, but Hunter Coffman stopped it cold and Elkmont gained possession. Valencia added another field goal to extend the lead to 20-7.
Nick Freeman responded for West with a dazzling 38-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 20-14. West attempted an onside kick, but Pankey again was there to recover for the Red Devils.

Valencia would convert his third field goal opportunity and give Elkmont a 23-14 lead. Valencia would convert his third field goal opportunity and give Elkmont a 23-14 lead at halftime.

A 16-yard touchdown run by Blankenship trimmed the Elkmont lead to 23-21. Later in the third quarter West pulled ahead 27-23 on a Lancaster 1-yard dive.  Then the bottom dropped out of the Elkmont effort. They weren't able to score in the second half while the Wildcats tacked on 19 points. In the fourth quarter, Lancaster scored on another 1-yard plunge and finally Freeman scooted in from 10 yards out to finish the scoring at 42-23.

“We made some plays offensively and made some stops defensively. The first half was just about the best half of football we’ve played this season,” Elkmont head coach Sean Holt said.
“I’m proud of our kids and how we played tonight,”

Stat Highlights:
Jordan Nelson - Threw 107 yards; 70 yards rushing
Zeb Pankey - 67 yard rushing

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE WEST LIMESTONE WILDCATS?

This is one of the high interest games during the  Elkmont season.  Let's learn a bit more about the West Limestone Wildcats
HEAD COACH
Jordan Cantrell (second season, 3-7 last year) has been coaching football at West Limestone for nine years.

OVERALL
Despite last season’s record, the Wildcats have entered the season riding some momentum.  The Wildcats return eight starters on offense and nine on defense.

HOW ARE THEY DOING THIS SEASON?
Brooks 28, West Limestone 7
Brooks took control early and used a strong defensive effort to beat West Limestone.

Deshler 40, West Limestone 19
Hunter Hill ran for three touchdowns and threw for another as Deshler took advantage of four West Limestone turnovers to pull away with the win.
West Limestone 26, East Limestone 6
It was 1999 since West Limestone (1-1) defeated county rival East Limestone (0-1).

Tanner 28, West Limestone 21
Tanner  scored on an 80-yard kickoff return with 10:41 left in the game to give them the win over West Limestone in a see-saw thriller.

OFFENSE
One reason for the 2014 late season turnaround was a change on offense. After scoring just 40 points in the first five games, the Wildcats switched from the run-oriented Wing-T to more of a pro-style attack with the quarterback in the shotgun formation throwing the ball more often.
That style of offense will continue this season. It takes advantage of the skills of Reed Blankenship (6-2, 175, Jr.), who will shift from quarterback to receiver to running back. Last year, Blankenship led the team in rushing with 700 yards and six touchdowns on 70 carries and in receiving with 21 receptions for 402 yards and three touchdowns.

When Blankenship moves from quarterback, Chase Lancaster (5-11, 205, Jr.) moves over from his running back spot. Graham Pepper (5-10, 155, Soph.) also will take some snaps.
Other players to watch for on offense are backs Nick Freeman (5-9, 160, Jr.), Reed Walker (5-8, 160, Jr.) and Cody Shedd (5-10, 215, Sr.). On the line, it’s Cody Smith (6-0, 240, Jr.), Brayden Clem (5-10, 210, Sr.) and Eli Rogers (6-0, 205, Sr.). Returning at tight end is Andrew Thornton (6-4, 190, Jr.).

DEFENSE
The Wildcats also have changed the defense. It has a multitude of formations designed for different situations. Blankenship is described as the “general” in charge of the defense from his free safety position. Shedd, Rogers and Clem star on the defensive line. Lancaster is a big-play guy at rover. Tanner Walker (5-8, 170, Jr.) returns at linebacker. Cole Smith (5-8, 160, Jr.) is at safety, with Alex Maples (6-2, 175, Jr.) at cornerback.
“We have more depth on defense than we’ve ever had,” Cantrell said. “We can rotate a lot of people.”

ITEMS OF INTEREST

  • West Limestone has 41 players. Just five are seniors. The 17 juniors make up almost half of the team. “They have always been winners in every sport they have played,” Cantrell said. “They don’t like to lose.”
Three of the juniors — Blankenship, Lancaster and Maples — played on West Limestone’s state championship basketball team.
  • Cantrell expects to see another dogfight in the region that sent Deshler, Wilson, Elkmont and Central to the playoffs in 2014.

  • When Cantrell arrived at West Limestone in 2007, the school’s football coaching staff consisted of him and head coach David Arnsparger. In 2015, West Limestone will have six coaches for the varsity and two more for the middle school program.
