Elkmont kept its playoff hopes alive with a 17-0 victory at
Colbert County (3-5) Friday night in a key Class 3A, Region 8 matchup.
Elkmont, fourth in the division, used big plays on defense to defeat fifth-place
Colbert County a young team in a program known around the state as a perennial
playoff contender.
The Red Devils (5-3, 3-3 Region 8) seized an early 7-0 advantage when senior
Daniel Logan took the handoff up the middle for a 2-yard touchdown with 17 seconds
remaining in the first quarter.
Elkmont went ahead 10-0 at halftime when junior Ben Ferguson intercepted the
Indians’ freshman quarterback and sophomore placekicker Jose Hernandez drilled
a 36-yard field goal from the hash mark with 5:13 left in the second quarter.
The Red Devils preserved the shutout with two more key defensive plays
in the second half.
Senior Cole Glass recovered a fumble in Colbert County’s end zone and utilized
two blocks to return it 100 yards for a TD with 7:15 left in the third quarter.
Elkmont senior signal-caller Hayden Huseth, who went 6 of 10 for 41 yards and
accounted for 92 of the Red Devils’ 139 total yards, preserved the shutout
with an interception late in the fourth quarter.
Elkmont will play at county rival Clements Friday in region play. If the Red Devils win,
they will clinch the No. 4 playoff seed and a road game at Hamilton
in the opening round of the postseason
